Continuing my exploration of Sydenham/Forest Hill for good food and drink, I stumbled across the Sylvan Post en route to St David Coffeehouse, another Forest Hill favourite. Located less than 5 mins walk from the Forest Hill train station, this local watering-hole is set in what was once a post office and retains much of its history through classy and considered decor with items such as old postcards, the old post box and even the original clock providing a reminder of yester-year. It certainly is funky to say the least Having settled in and finally over my initial awe of the design, my attention moved to the menu which, I admit, I approached with some scepticism. Yes the place is awesome with a drinks list to match but so many times, that’s where the attention to detail stops and the food offerings become a token gesture. At Sylvan Post, this is far from the truth. Being winter, I was seeking comfort food which I found in the chicken, bacon and leek pot pie served with savoy cabbage and a side of hand cut chips. The pie was awesome and just what the doctor ordered on a chilly night. The filling was flavourful and generous and pie-top perfectly flaky. A top main was reinforced by an equally impressive chocolate and hazelnut bread and butter pudding served with custard. So on paper, Sylvan Post certainly ticks every box – great food and drink in a cool setting. Sounds too good to be true right? But a place like this is expectedly going to be extremely popular and on this night, my wait for the meal took just a tad under an hour. Granted it was a Saturday but that still seems excessive. However that is the only blemish to an otherwise great meal. Also follow me on Twitter @annixontong and @WeTryKai and on Instagram @annixontong. wetrykai.wordpress.com
