In the UK, any mention of a curry usually conjures up thoughts of the Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi variety and I’m ok with that because the curry here is pretty damn good. I can’t vouch for its authenticity (given the closest I’ve come to being an expert is a trip to Indian to taste a version of the real thing) but I can say it certainly pleases my palette which is what’s most important right? But despite all the attention the fore mentioned curry gets and the fact that it is so easily accessible, my preference is that which originates from Thailand – the mighty massaman. With its distinctive combination of spices and coconut milk, I find it completely moreish and a meal usually ends up with me taking to leftover sauce with a spoon. But to find a good one is no easy feat, especially as you go further out from central London but thankfully residents of Forest Hill and Sydenham can call on Thai Orchard to provide their fix. Tucked into the quiet corner of St David Lane a stone’s throw from Forest Hill station, Thai Orchard is busy cooking up a storm and its little wonder why it’s so popular once you’ve had a taste. Dishes pay homage to tradition with an authenticity which is impressive to say the least. The lamb shank massaman is the dish for me – the slow-cooked lamb just falls apart and soaks in all that beautiful sauce making for a delightful mouthful – and paired with a chicken pad thai and a prawn tom yum starter and wham!; that’s a formidable meal. If you’re in the mood for Thai in the Forest Hill/Sydenham area, look no further than Thai Orchard. I haven’t found any better but then again, I’ve stopped looking since I found these guys. Had takeaway from here last week, arrived promptly and packaged well. Very good quality and so makes a change from the usual crap chinese takeaways. We had the pad thai, green and red curries which were all very good but beware of the hot dishes on the menu as they really are very very hot!
Lovely Thai restaurant in Forest Hill. We thought we’d better give it a go since we live in Forest Hill and we were not disappointed. The food on the set menu we chose was lovely and the Saturday evening atmosphere was gently alive with other diners chatter. The service was unobtrusive and good. We’d definitely go back on another occasion.
