Okay – bear with me. I wouldn’t normally find myself in a Whetherspoons (call me a snob) but this came of a fight I had with a friend about how ethical their food could be at the prices they charge. Turns out, very ethical (we consulted the internet); so off we went for breakfast. They source free range eggs and responsibly sourced fish, and stock both local and international beers… but what I’m here to tell you about is their vegetarian breakfast. The large will cost you 4.40 – and I challenge you to find a breakfast cheaper than that for the kind of size we’re talking here – and, surprise surprise, it’s pretty good. I like the ratio of hash browns to everything else; hash browns being an under appreciated element of the full fry-up. Add a coffee and an orange juice and you’re still not letting go of a full tenner. And as for the setting: I’m not usually a fan of Whetherspoons’ cavernous and silent pubs (they make a point not to play music in their venues) but The Capitol is a disused cinema – so the hushed air feels kind of fitting in such a grand environment. It’s a beautiful old building, with many of the original features still intact.Overall, a pleasant surprise!
