Cape of Good Hope – Oxford, England. One would suspect from the name that this place would specialise in South African cuisine, however sharing the name with the famous landmark in South Africa is the only similarity that this place has. It is one of the many pubs around town, ergo it is what it is and it is not bad for what it is. Going out quickly with company for a meeting I went here one night. With a baby in tow, it could not be a long meeting. The pub is pretty big and set in a traditional building. At night, it is surprisingly atmospheric with live music adding to the said atmosphere. Having the bar being more centralised makes for better organisation and spread. There is more space upstairs and a garden – however, seeing as I did not see those I cannot comment. Service is what you would expect from a pub. Seeing as it was after a dinner at home, the people I went along with did not get much. There was the option of getting a choice of three types of finger foods from a selection – we got tempura chicken, sweet potato wedges and salt & pepper calamari. To drink, I ordered double espresso. All three of the items were good, with the chicken perhaps being the best one with a good crispy batter and soft meat. The sweet potato wedges were well done having the skin still on and huge. Finally, the salt and pepper calamari was alright – nothing to write home about. I was not too fond of the espresso – it was a bit watered down and only had a slight coffee taste. One person at the table informed me that apparently it was only single espresso. As far as pub food goes – I have had a lot better elsewhere; still, it was good for a brief snack. At best, the Cape of Good Hope is a go-to place for safe food – returning is dependable on circumstances.
