Great comfort food. Grade: BMy wife and I, on a recent trip to the UK, had some time to kill in Oxford and took a stroll through town. Just as we realized we were hungry, we saw West Cornwall Pasty Co. My sights were set.The case in front of the store displayed a variety of these traditional southwest English hot pockets. We each kept it simple and went for the traditional steak and potato version. Others variations include lamb, pork, and chicken, as well as several vegetarian options.Served piping hot, the first bite into the golden pastry shell revealed an almost stew-like mix of meat, potato, turnip, and onion. There is no sauce, per se, only the juices of the meat and veg. Nicely seasoned, although a little salty, it was delicious and filling.In addition to their signature dish, they also have side dishes–potato wedges and beans–and alternate choices such as pizza, rolls (sausage, bacon, cheese & onion, etc.), and breakfast items. This chain has stores in nearly 30 cities in England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland. Especially on a chilly day, I’d love the chance to stop in for another pasty from these folks.
