The popularity of this place speaks of the gentrification of Hackney Road. I thought it was very pricey. Most red wines by the glass were around the 10 mark. Even the soft drinks are 4.50 a pop.We ordered a little snack with our wine. The aubergine and cherry tomato tapenade dish was unpleasant as well as a tiny portion for 6.50. Four very thin baguette sized slices of sour dough toast. Four very greasy rounds of fried aubergine. Some overly tart cherry tomato halves and tapenade with gritty hard bits in it (probably ground up olive pits).A glass each of house white and red and our tiny bar snack set us back 21. Not being a wine afficionado, this place is wasted on me. Most of the other people in the bar were sniffing their glasses and the staff seemed to know a lot about the wines. We had the same order next door at Morito (a glass each of house red and white as well as a generous and sublime aubergine snack) for 18. If you care more about food than wine, go to Morito.
Lovely cheese and wine here. Also, if you’re really lucky, you might, like we did, find yourself sat next to some truly top notch wine snobs. We didn’t talk much because the wankery next to us was next level. And bespoke for the venue. 4 stars for the venue. 5 stars to the guys next to us. Great work.
Pretentious and stingy. I love fine dining and fine wines, and there was nothing fine about this place. Okay, the place does look very nice, and the ambience is okay. Having waited 20min to be served whilst watching the waitresses gossip, text on their phones and even drinking wine themselves, my partner and I nearly walked out. I don’t mind paying top dollar for good wine. What I do mind is being served a wine tasting portion! 10pounds should at least get you a ‘normal’ sized glass of wine. There was an air of arrogance and pretentiousness about the waitresses, which doesn’t go very well with the food either. Definitely better places to go for wine lovers and people who like good service.
Our next stop was Sager + Wilde on Hackney Road, halfway to Broadway Market from Hoxton Overground. I tried to pop in to this lovely wine bar on my last crawl around the area, but they shut rather early at 11pm to appease their new neighbours. Hopefully they will be able to extend this in the New Year once they have settled in.Sager + Wilde are Michael and Charlotte Sager-Wilde who ran a very popular wine bar popup at the end of 2012. They have now found a permanent home, and they haven’t skimped on the design. We were very taken with the pavement light bar top. There is a Daily Menu with affordable wines and fizz, available by the glass and bottle, and a slightly more pricey Market List with the likes of Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Domaine Henri Boillot 2005 Burgundy at 148. Takeaway is 10 off the list price. There are some interesting bottled beers, as well as a few cognac, sherry and vermouth options. To eat, there are grilled cheese sandwiches, tartines, charcuterie, cheese, snacks and even ice cream. We were well looked after at the bar by Michael on our brief visit, who started by pouring us some free sparkling water which he struggles to give away as most people think they have to pay for it. C went for a glass of the Prosecco Di Valdobbiadene ‘Bottle Fermented’ Zuchetto 2012 Veneto and I greatly enjoyed my white Macon Uchizy Talmard 2011 Burgundy. I highly recommend paying these guys a visit, and staying longer than we did! I will be back. mattthelist.com
For our anniversary we decided to take in the stretch of Hackney Road on which quite a few new bars have opened. One of which is Sager and Wilde, a wine bar bringing unusual but tasty wine to London at affordable prices. We only stayed in long enough to have two drinks but I absolutely fell in love with the place. The aroma of cheese… the elegant decor… the friendly and knowledgable staff. I only wish I’d had room for one of their toasties! jaminaward.wixsite.com
