A nice costly little restaurant in the busy Hampstead high street. They do wonderful Chinese food and while they’re slightly more expensive than many their counterparts they justify this by offering food of a much higher quality.I like to start with the dim sum platter, big enough to share with a few friend. My signature main is the sea bass fillet sometimes with steamed rice sometimes without. The service is good if unspectacular and there drinks as well. It can get busy so either make a reservation or go early.
We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance. We were looking for a new place to eat near home and we came across ‘Goldfish’ and boy were we pleased. Interesting menu with some really nice modern twists. The soft shell crab was awesome and so was their stir fried beef with garlic and bird eye red chillies and Chinese greens.
Goldfish does great Chinese food. Very much Anglochinese with some modern twists (but not a bad thing) and done extremely well. The place prides itself on being ‘clean’: no MSG, no gloopy thickeners and everything cooked fresh. It is expensive, though, which is why I have not given it 5 stars.
Poor food accompanied by poor service. My friend took me to lunch at the Goldfish for dim sum as it had a good reputation.Decors not too bad. It was very quiet. I think there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. We had the dim sum and while I wasnt expecting trolley service for the small venue, I thought wed get a choice of dishes. However, dishes were just randomly brought out. Later on they let us choose from a few baskets that they had in their hand. Which then leads me to the question of how long had they been prepared for?? We asked for some pork and prawn dumplings, but they didnt have any, there was no pork at all. The waitress had very limited English and could barely understand us at all and we could not understand her. I ordered a flower tea, for one. However, later on my friend was feeling a bit ill from the food so I offered her some tea. We requested another cup however; we later found out with the bill that they charged us tea for 2. They said that the tea was per person not per pot. Id understand this if fresh tea was constantly provided, however the waitress only topped it up with hot water so the second pot was already weak and the third refill was essentially tinted water. We asked if 10 people had the tea, would they charge 25 and they said yes, so essentially, 25 for 1 little teabag…The entire bill came to 50 which we both thought was expensive not only for the quality of food but the quantity also. So for terrible service, expensive and mediocre food, I dont think well ever return again.
Goldfish Hampstead. Hmmm, just came across of Max’s review of Goldfish in Hampstead….and I honestly think you are exagerating the so called ”bad experience” u had there!! I eat there quite often and even when they were totally full and I had to wait for a table I have not received or seen anyone receveing the service u said u did! I also know many friends who are regulars there and the place is great and everybody’s happy!! And by the way buffet means that u can eat as much as u can there, in the restaurant!!! There are no takeaways for buffet deals darling, everybody knows that! I eat there weekly and the food is great, I love the fact they do not use msg as I cannot take msg and the staff are ok, nice and polite! The place is great and your review is rubbish dear Max, sorry but I know very well that place and I am sure you are being nasty here! I know the bartender hehe and u NEVER get the drinks after the food like u said, u get the drinks before u have time to sit down properly! Goldfish is great with healty food and nice service and I strongly reccomend this place!
Awful restaurant. I visited Goldfish with my girlfriend over the weekend and it was my worst experience in a restaurant ever. We walked in to the restaurant and stood for 5 minutes without a single member of staff even making eye contact and given that half the tables were empty it wasn’t like they were rushed off of their feet. Eventually we were shown to a table without a word and left there without even a menu. After sitting there without anyone coming to serve us we eventually called over one of the waitresses and ordered a couple of drinks and said that we would like the Sunday brunch buffet. The food took forever to arrive and was incredibly average and seemed like we were given leftovers. We had several plates of particularly boring dim sum followed by plain noodles, sweet and sour chicken and a platter of deep fried pastry bits and ribs. Perhaps this is the normal arrangement but to us it seemed a very strange combination. Our drinks arrived after our food was finished. Once our inital round of food was gone and an age had past we were given more dim sum and when we asked if we could take it away she went to ask the manager (I presume) who looked at our food and deemed it unworthy of being taken away. My girlfriend is a restaurant manager and was astounded at how badly we were treated.I would rate this restaurant a 0/10. Rude staff, awful service and extremely average food that might as well have been served in a trough.
