I’m giving two stars for the food and ambience. However, I was hugely disappointed by the waiting staff’s attitude and slow service. We waited a long time between meals before the next order was delivered. We had to constantly catch the waitress’s eye to order drinks. There was no initiation from the waitress to ask if we needed anything else. When I told the manager about the poor service, he offered to compensate us by taking the dessert price off the bill which was 3.90 and instead still charged us 5.50 for the pathetic service. I will not be going back there again. Food is decent but service delivery was so bad that its totally put me off from going back there again!

When presented with the bill we realised that there was an OPTIONAL service charge of 12% added to the bill. We inquired about why the service charge was so high and were met with a very rude and hostile reply. Out of principle we refused to pay as we believe that we should not be pressured into paying more than we want for a mediocre service. The waiter’s demeanor changed instantly and he tried to pressure us into paying the extra 12% as well as trying to embarrass us in front of other customers in the restaurant by raising his voice. We stood by our decision not to pay the service charge and reasonably tried to explain that it was a matter of principle, and that his behaviour was not helping his persuasion. He called a manager to come and deal with our situation, which really was not necessary, and we expressed that we would not like to argue and would simply like to pay for our meal and leave. The manager tried to tell us that the service charge was compulsory even though it was clearly stated on the bill that it was optional. After this he said ‘you don’t have to pay the service charge, but we will not serve you again’ when we inquired about what he meant he said ‘whenever you come, we’ll be fully booked’.This was the most ridiculous response I have ever heard. I was shocked at how arrogant the staff were over their mediocre restaurant that has a tiny TV which plays BBC One in the waiting area. Having read some of the other reviews on here I am very surprised at how this restaurant is still open. I will never be eating here again and will be telling everyone I know not to either.

Food is deliciously crafted by a highly experienced chef, leaving authentic Chinese impression on the palate along with kind, unobtrusive service.
Long established and excellent. I read the two bad reviews here and was surprised as this did not sound like the Maxim’s I have visited over the last thirty years. I have always found the food excellent and the service also. Maybe they just recognise me. I have many fond memories of eating at this restaurant, including the night before my daughter was born.
I live in Northfields and went to Maxims as our favourite restaurant was full. The food was good but the service was awful. We were rushed through and they didn’t even say thank you or goodbye. I would not go there again.
Didn’t really take to this one. I thought it looked a bit dated inside, The food was alright but not anything special, and therefore I thought it was quite expensive for what it was.Just my 2cents, I know lots of people who like it. It just didn’t do it for me.
