CHRISTMAS DAY 2010. My partner and I decided to eat in the Amle Inn on Chrismas Day 2010. Unfortunately! The food was really awful, potatoes so overcooked, black in colour and hard that we could not even cut them in half (maybe that’s why we were given steak knives lol), vegetables also overcooked, no Yorkshire pudding, no piglets in blanket… very poor!! Not worth 50 each. Pudding was disgusting too (rhubarb crumble that was soggy and sour).I emailed and wrote to them but they did not even bother to reply to either! Very disappointing that they can’t even apologise!!!

I am from the nearby town of St albans, but travelled to the amble inn in harpenden on recommendation from my sister. I took my girlfriend (now fiance) for our second anniversary. I consider myself a wine conniseur and was impressed by the selections of wines they had. The atmosphere in the pub was also lovely, it was a gem of a traditional english pub as they used to be featuring a log fire and vintage decor. I ordered the steak (rare) and my girlfriend ordered the fish and chips. both were delivered in a timely fashion and both cooked to perfection. The steak was lovely (i actually now use the same butcher as they do after quiering about it) as was the fish and chips (with mushy peas too!) I was very happy with my meal and the service and have recommended them to several friends… And i shall be returning soon!

Its much better than it was!. The last time i was in this area of harpenden (almost 3 years ago!) the amble inn was called the dolphin and was very much a spit and sawdust pub full of the towns undesirables, im glad to say that it has now shed this image and is now a very nice quaint little pub with a real fire, quirky wallpaper and a nice menu, now although the menu does seem a little upmarket there is also a little blackboard with some pub classicsa on it, like fish and chips, steak, burger etc.i went there with my girlfriend and our 6 year old little boy last week and really enjoyed our food, i had the seabass with new potatoes, wild mushroom and asparagus and my wife had cornfed chicken breast with fondant potato and greens, both of which were really very good and although not an expert myself, id certainly have said it was cooked to perfection, we had 2 mains and a bottle of wine, and the little one ate from the kids menu which was 2 courses for about 6 with a drink, so all in all we came and ate out and had a lovely time for just over 30!the only real bad side about the amble inn was the fact that it would seriously benefit from table service rather than ordering at the bar, although it seems you may get tablew service if it wasnt too busy from the bar staff, im sure if they solved this, maybe with a dedicated waitress, then it would really benefit.however other than that minor gripe, Myself my wife and even the child were all very happy overall, and look forward to eating there again, and i definitely wont be leaving it for three years this time!
