If it’s not obvious from the name, Lecoq specializes in chicken and specifically rotisserie chicken, and they do it really well. The menu is simple, you choose a particular how much chicken you want and they have alternating choices of sides and trimmings. Their sides are always made with fresh ingredients and really tasty vegetables. The atmosphere is quite casual but they serve some really nice wines, which I thought added a nice touch to the restaurant. Overall, Lecoq has a simple menu but a refined cuisine. It’s a bit expensive but you definitely get your money’s worth and you won’t leave this restaurant still hungry.

My favourite part of a roast dinner has always been the potatoes. Never mashed. Never boiled. Always roasted, with a crispy golden outside, and a fluffy inside. At Le Coq, the focus is very much on the chicken. Its the only main course, lined up cooking on their rotisserie spits. The chicken was perfectly cooked, with moist, flavoursome meat and crisp golden skin. But you must not go and not order an extra side of their potatoes cooked in the rotisserie, which are therefore full of even more chicken-y flavour. The chicken does come with a side this week it was a tangle of soft, mellow fennel and nicely bitter cime di rapa (a type of broccoli). They also serve it with a little jug or gravy and pot of tarragon mayonnaise, which was a lovely extra.Along with the chicken as a main and the included side, its 17 for two courses or 22 for three, with two choices of starters and desserts that change weekly. N and I both had the delicious duck salad to start, with bits of crunchy and leaves and duck skin, scattered with pomegranate. The other option was skordalia, the Greek garlicky potato puree, with fried rings of butternut squash on top.For the desserts there is always a tart and an ice-cream – we shared the honey, walnut and rum tart. An alternative to the nutty, sticky pecan pie, with perfect short pastry. Its a relaxed room, and the service was great they must get a little tired of explaining to everyone that walks through the door that it is chicken only. They have kept it pared back at Le Coq, but its pulled off excellently. Its good value too they use properly free range Sutton Hoo chickens, which makes all the difference.

I genuinely thought this place was fabulous. It’s sort of a one-dish place – for mains all you can have is the Sutton Hoo rotisserie chicken, which is cooked to juicy perfection. Where they get to show their flair is the ever changing (daily) menu for starters, the side that the chicken comes with, and the dessert. For those courses you have two options. We decided to have two courses but we chose different courses to have so that we could try both starters and desserts. So, to start, we had an amazing bruschetta dish with cedro – a lemon flavoured ingredient without the bitterness. Absolutely gorgeous. The chicken came with swiss chard and an excellent sweet and sour sauce, and we got some really good roast potatoes on the side as well. Dessert was a pistachio and grapefruit tart which was more of a cake than a tart and a great end to the meal. jaminaward.wixsite.com
