I had not noticed this cafe as it is somewhat tucked away along a part of Canary Wharf that I do not walk that often but glad that I have now discovered this location. I used to visit a Cafe Rouge near my house many years ago whenI lived in the suburbs so I have fond memories of this chain. On this visit we were able to sit outside even though it was quite a windy day but it was nice to take advantage of what little sun was shining and thankfully there were no smokers around. There were a couple of other brave souls who followed our lead so maybe we started a trend that day.We enjoyed the special two course lunch option which for $12.95 I thought was quite good value. My pate was quite a good size for a starter with two large pieces of fresh french bread and the mushrooms were soon devoured by my husband so Im guessing they were very tasty. We had the minute steak with french fries and the chicken salad, both hearty lunch size portions.i think Cafe Rouge, while nothing fancy, offers good food at a reasonable price and a varied menu offering. Our server was friendly although we did notice that the ‘optional’ tip was included on our final bill without being asked if we wanted it included? We would have gladly given this amount (we’ve lived in the US long enough to have tipping as part of our culture)but thought it wrong not to be told or asked? nofixedabodeforsue.com
On our way to Tower Bridge we found this palce in a hidden boardwalk in the docks along with other small restaurants and cafes. Early morning, so only a few more people in this cafe for breakfast. Despite our tight budget we ended up choosing some good options at affordable prices. The food was good. The bread was fresh and the scrambled eggs nice and fluffy. Fresh orange juice and a great cappuccino. My granola was left without yoghurt as they didn’t have it in stock (despite being in the menu) but we found an aternative. Despite only 2 employees it didn’t take long to get our breakfast.
My office is nearby and I have lunch here every couple of months or so with colleagues. Still haven’t figured out what to order so as not to be disappointed with my meal. The cheap minute steak was a bit tough. Moules marinieres was overcooked and rubbery. Bouillabaise (no longer on the menu) was served with rouille that didn’t taste homemade. Will just have to keep trying other menu items until I find something satisfactory to eat. The steaks that some of my colleagues were having looked pretty good, actually.
Reasonable price french food. Loved the bread basket. Specially visited the canary wharf branch, nice ambience, close to the river and station.Ordered the Rouge steak and Chicken with mishroom and really enjoyed both dishes. Would visit again.
The famous French cafe’s may have been the inspiration behind Cafe Rouge but if you compare it with Parisian cafes, this place is hardly a match.I have been here for lunches, dinners or just for a relaxing coffee and every time I feel unsatisfied. What always stands out is the service, it’s slow and it often takes ages to get into the field of vision of the waiters.Very recently we had gone for drinks/ coffee on Sunday evening. True to anywhere else in Canary Wharf, this place was almost dead. There were hardly 10 people in the restaurant and still it took us ages to get orders or the bill. They have a few beers to chose from, the usual Stella artois and leffe and Hoegaarden (which they had run out of on that day). I guess when the choice is so limited; the least they could do is to keep it stocked up.
A good place, conveniently located near the main tube station, The drinks and cocktails here are good, would recommend them.I also frequent this place for the breakfast. Would call it slightly pricey, but high quality. Clicked my taste buds! However where I found this place lacking was the coffee. I don’t call myself an expert on coffee, but would miss that next time! All in all, be it early morning breakfast, or late evening drinks, this place manages to just tick the right boxes.
