OverviewA quick coffee to wake you up with coffee roasted onsiteFlat WhiteWhat is it?: A single shot of coffee with two-thirds milkWhat does it taste like? An independent coffeehouse situated in the heart of Birmingham with a stripped back interior great for on the go or for watching the world go by. The unique thing about this coffeehouse is that it has an onsite roaster. Their passion to attention to detail is shown through their coffee with the delicate flavours balancing out and providing a sublime taste.Price: 2.70What else is on offer?: Other coffee based drinks, teas and juices are available.Alcohol On Site: YesWhere: City Centre and Ikon Gallery, Birmingham

Good coffee, cakes and cheerful staff.Another London inspired coffee/ breakfast cafe in Birmingham. The place is great, cool tables, chairs, ‘on trend’ lighting and decor. The drinks and deserts are delicious. I ordered the vegetarian mezz dish and it was a little dry and underwhelming, especially for the price tag. I would come here again, but for a snack rather than breakfast or lunch.

This is a great little place. Only tried a smoothie though. The service was friendly, and created a bespoke drink, which tasted great. Warm environment, however slightly cramped. Would go back to try the mouth-watering baked goods! Based on the smoothie, the sweets would taste as good as they look.

Definitely a favourite! I noticed now they have changed their menu. Their white hot chocolate drink was amazing!!! Tried their shakshuka and scrambled eggs with salmon and they were rly good! Only problem was that they took around an hour to get the food ready. They were short on staff at that time. I’m sure they fixed this issue by now

Good atmosphere and service. Presentation of coffee was good, but it was luke warm and bitter taste; basic barista skills and maintenance? Disappointing.

I had arranged to meet a good friend for breakfast early on Saturday. I thought it would be easy to find somewhere in Britains second city that offered a nice breakfast menu, but every venue that I checked didnt open until 10am. Then I remembered a tweet I had seen mentioning the launch of a new independent called Yorks Bakery Cafe. I was delighted to find it opened at 8am and so I went to visit the latest independent coffee shop in Birmingham. Location The location of the cafe could not have been better. It is a few minutes walk from New Street Station, in Newhall Street and very easy to find as it is on the corner of the street.AtmosphereAs it was early there were a few customers visiting for take-out and a couple staying in. I really liked the urban feel of Yorks Bakery Cafe the furniture and decor is very New York loft apartment. As soon as you walked through the door youre hit by the relaxed feel; its definitely a place you could while away a few hours reading or doing some work.foodI thought that there might have been a bit more of a selection for breakfast than what was available. But having said that, what they did have looked very tempting. Whilst we were deciding what to have they suggested a couple of quiches. This is something that generally tends to be on the menu later in the day. We also decided to sample the honey cake with blueberries, biscotti with apricots and macaroons. It wasnt long before our quiches arrived and they were delicious; just the right amount of crunch in the pastry. Just add bacon and I could definitely see this being on the breakfast menu in future. We really enjoyed the honey cake, biscotti and macaroons too. drinksWe both had lattes with our breakfast and I think this is the nicest I have tried in a long time, strong and creamy. We also tried their jasmine green tea. I personally wasnt keen on it, but my friend enjoyed it. If you are into tea, there is a huge selection for you to choose from.serviceNothing was too much trouble, even when we requested something a little more substantial than the lovely pastries that were on offer. Of course it was only day two, so lets hope this is the level of service that can still be expected from the team now that the cafe is in full swing. overall verdictIll definitely be visiting Yorks Bakery Cafe next time I am in Birmingham. The service was very friendly and helpful. We paid a little over 10 for our breakfast, which I thought was excellent value for the quality of food and coffee we had. Since our visit I have seen more tempting breakfast options via their twitter feed, which I am pleased about. I guess each day will be different and that could very well make this independent stand out from the stiff competition. dinebirmingham.co.uk

There are loads of independent coffee places in Birmingham, and this is one of my favourites. A vast choice of different coffees and teas are available, plus huge piles of fresh cakes and baked goods which are made on site. Weekend (hungover) breakfasts are also very good. High quality ingredients served in a rustic style (you get your own pan if you have the full English!) and weekday b’fast/lunch buffet-style bars are a great twist on the traditional deli.If you’re in the business district, or in town for shopping and want to remove yourself from the bustle, then head for York’s. Service can be a little… relaxed*… in busy periods.*slow danmorrissey.com
