We went to the Riverside Cafe for lunch on the off chance as I knew it served decent coffee and cake, from the local cycling group’s rides sometimes starting there. But I’d only ever been there out of the summer months, and hadn’t had a chance to sit out the back on the terrace. This terrace overlooks the River Don through trees and shrubs, and we spent our whole visit watching ducks and adolescent ducklings playing in the water, perhaps two or three storeys below us. It was utterly idyllic and a world away from the busy confluence of Catch Bar Lane, Leppings Lane and Middlewood Road. From the outset, the service was friendly and charming, and the food that arrived was plentiful and tasty, with fresh side salads. The latte (for those who care about coffee) was probably on the creamy side rather than the dark side, but it was refreshing and not at all bitter. The tea came in big mugs of astonishing cheapness. But then all the food was far cheaper than you’d expect from the surroundings, the portion sizes and the quality. It’s definitely worth coming here most of the year – on cold, wet winter days it’s been nice to sit in the brightly lit pine surroundings of the main cafe – but you really must go and sit on the terrace while weather permits. We had a great day in Hillsborough overall and the Riverside Cafe really kicked it all off.
