This restaurant was severely disappointing. Maybe 2 stars is even generous.I came in on a Tuesday for take-away because it is on my route home from work. Though being affiliated with Cafe Portugal and a few other Portuguese places in Vauxhall, this had nothing in common. The restaurant looked a bit dingy, with no visible food & beverage license or rating. I know that is really random to point out, but if I can’t see their rating anywhere, that indicates a problem to me.There were 2 other dining parties at the restaurant while I was there and they did not look happy. Over-hearing the conversation, the kitchen had messed up their order pretty badly. This was not reassuring for me, as I had placed an order for a Bistec to go and an espresso while I waited. The waiter who took my order seemed annoyed that I was ordering from him at all, and that I was doing take-away.The espresso was good (strong but also smooth) but my take-away meal left a lot to be desired.. the steak a bit rubbery, the chips a bit stale…and the price-tag definitely did not merit the quality.I won’t be going back.
I went to Mar Azul with a friend one afternoon after we decided to keep dinner arrangements local as we didn’t really feeling like travelling. I had walked pass the restaurant many times in the past and was eager to see how is was inside and it was nice. Once seated I ordered the grill lamb chops’ which was alright but nothing special. The menu was mostly seafood which I’m not a big fan of ,so i didn’t really have much to choose from. Overall it was nicely decorated inside the meal cost me around 14 which was maybe a little bit over priced. The cuisine was a bit odd for me but my friend seemed to enjoy her meal so I guess it can’t of been that bad .
I have to say I’ve had mixed feelings in regards to Mar Azul, the atmosphere and staff are amazing and restaurant is fun, they often have live music in the evenings so it really has a bit of everything. In all my visits, there has always been a problem, in my eyes, with the food. For example a strawberry cheesecake which wasn’t really a cheesecake but more of a strawberry mousse… This wouldn’t have been a problem but if the menu says cheesecake i expect to get a cheesecake! Another time, when having the peppered steak i found it quite salty, now this is personal preference, someone else could have found it perfect. I wouldn’t say id never go there again but i was quite disappointed considering i absolutely loved the atmosphere of the place!
We were here for our Valentine’s meal on a weekend afternoon. Both of us are massive seafood lovers and Portuguese cuisine would remind one of his home. Glad, it was a brilliant choice! To begin with, decent choice of wine, we asked for some crisp white to go with the seafood and it was perfect. For starters, we ordered some clams poached in garlic olive oil, white wine broth, braised with coriander along with whole fresh king prawn grilled in a flavorful garlic butter sauce – memorable! For mains, he ordered a grilled cod drizzled with hot olive oil, garlic, served with punched potatoes and I went for a charcoal grilled seabass. The cod was cooked to perfection with all the flavors soaked in well, the potatoes were a bonus! The seabass was fresh but perhaps a tad dry. For dessert, we shared a passionfruit cheesecake which was delightful. We had a lovely time, the decor is very beach/seaside like, we had a couple of old men (perhaps regulars) who even played some great music while we enjoyed our meal. A must visit for any seafood addict.
