This was my first time here – but I know I want to go back already!I went for dinner with some friends on a Thursday evening and we turned up at 8pm and the place was full. They took our number and we retired across the road to Wahaca for a margarita whilst we waited. We finally got seated about 20 minutes later. My friend Tiva knew of a deal to get us free beers with every meal over 10, so we all decided to try the chateaux steak paired with the amber ale, as recommended by our waiter. The steak was amazing – great flavour, lovely and tender, with a good tasty char on the outside, but yet still cooked rare to perfection. The steak was 15 and is served on a wooden board, looks good, but maybe not as good as a warm plate! We ordered some broccoli and chips to share and both the sauces, chimichurri and the truffle Bearnaise. The broccoli was also charred slightly, the chips wonderful, crispy and fluffy in the midde.I loved the truffle Bearnaise sauce – and whilst the chimichurri is traditional Argentine accompaniment for steak, the herb and garlic sauce was a little overpowering and it definitely lingers! They get their steak from Swaledale in Yorkshire and it was one of the best steaks I’ve had in a while. Still I want to go back to try some of the other items on the menu, so a return visit is definitely in order!
Not being familiar with London eateries, my friends and I stumbled across Beef & Brew after a few jars at the nearby Camden Brewery. It was a choice between here and the bar across the road, and on comparison of the menu Beef & Brew made an easy choice. With two very red blooded males and myself, we couldn’t really go wrong with steak and beer, the choice was made even more attractive by the price. Dinner for under 15 in central London, happy with that. The dining room isn’t the most comfortable, a cold clinical space akin the the abattoirs it frequents, decked with old wooden school chairs which are definitely chosen for the form over their function. The drinks selection was limited, but well thought out, quality over quantity. Seeing Harviestoun on offer was a pleasant surprise, although I personally would argue there are far better Scottish breweries. For food I felt we had plenty of choice, despite such a narrow edict. Both my companions chose the hangar steak, whilst I went for a steak bun with shallot rings and bearnaise. There was a little confusion as to whether the food that initially arrived at the table was mine or not, and after a flying visit back to the kitchen it was ascertained that it was, and I could enjoy my meal, several mouthfuls behind my guests by this point. In my semi-inebriated state I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The brioche bun nice and sweet, complimenting the bearnaise and set of by the salty beef and shallot. The shallots had been deep fried a little too long, although the texture was appreciated with a slightly warm salad offering no crunch. The hangar steaks appeared to go down very well and very quickly!Merry as we were, we decided to go for dessert. Mine of a chocolate based variety, The Man and our other guest looking for a more liquid finish. The Man ordered a 12% stout, and we were all a little taken aback when the 375ml bottle arrived with three glasses. There’s responsible drinking and then assuming too much.Service was the biggest downfall of our visit. Our welcome was cold if not non-existent, and staff members didn’t appear to be very enthused for a brand spanking new venue. Even the mix up with my meal was dealt with uncomfortably by someone who appeared to be a member of the management not just your run of the mill front of house. You get what you pay for however, and for an indulgent drunken snack in central London I think we came out pretty well fed. thehannarchistcookbook.com
