This is the best Cambodian restaurant I’ve been to in London…. it also happens to be the worst Cambodian restaurant I’ve been to in London. I have travelled to Cambodia before but its been quite a long time so can’t really remember what I ate. My best food refs would come from a recipe book I own by Rick Stein… I spot only a couple of authentically Cambodian dishes on the menu, namely the Lok Lak Beef and Fish Amok. Our set menu contained the beef dish. But for the rest we received a plate of what could only be described as generic Asian starters; spring rolls, satay sticks and some kind of mini samosa. The second course of garlic mushrooms and mango salad despite not sounding that exotic were a couple of my favourites. For main the Japanese Prawns (not even trying to make it sound Cambodian anymore) had a floury sort of feel withing the breadcrumb batter, Spring chilli chicken was unassuming. But the beef dish was nice and tender. Maybe I’m being picky today but the steamed rice was overcooked and the beer was from Singapore. Besides the food the staff were very friendly. Empty restaurant for a Thursday night. Kathleen our waitress was adorable. The veg sharing starter divine. It contained an amazing mushroom starter which turned out was drowned in this Maggie sauce. The Mango salad was wonderfully tasty.
As this is the only Cambodian restaurant in London we visited in anticipation of an upcoming holiday. I am shocked there is only one Cambodian in all of London, as within a 20 minute walk of my digs in Shoreditch we have twelve Vietnamese restuarants and five places that serve Thai. Our waitress did say that although the cook is Cambodian, the food at Lemongrass is not authentic Khmer as it has been influenced by other kitchens. I did notice a French colonial slant, especially with the vegetable dishes. The dining room is simple, but charming. The seats near the window are a bit draughty in winter. Service is a little slow, but the food is worth the wait.We started with the garlic and lemon mushroom saute, This was a generous portion of lightly sauteed button mushrooms doused with quite a lot of lemon, some garlic and very flavorful coarsely ground pepper. There was a subtle hint of prahok (fish sauce) in the background. The mushrooms were only lightly cooked, but had that characteristic smoky taste of having been wokked at a very high temperature. Very delicious. This dish was accompanied with a little sweet and sour pickled cabbage and carrot. For mains we had luk lok steak, spring chilli chicken and sauteed asparagus. The green sauteed asparagus was lightly cooked and served with the very flavorful, coarse pepper. It wasn’t until I tried the sauce on its own that I realized that prahok was a major component of the dish. The chilli chicken dish was a light sweet and sour stir fry. However the sweetness came not from an unctuous sugary sauce, but slivers of ripe mango. The chicken was tender and dredged lightly in cornstarch which gave a crispy crust. The sliced cabbage and julienned carrot in this stir fry were so lightly cooked as to be almost raw. A nice contrasting crunch. It wasn’t quite as fiery as it looked as the raw chilli scattered over the dish had been de seeded. Raw coriander added a nice herbal undertone. My companion did find it slightly under seasoned so added salt. The luk lok steak was beautiful. Very tender chunks of steak stir fried in a caramelized sauce with onions which were charred but otherwise nearly raw. Again this added crunchy sweetness. Like the mushrooms, this dish had the smokiness of having been cooked quickly at an extremely high temperature. Coarse pepper was on this dish too. I did wonder if the awesome pepper used in several of the dishes was the famous Kampok pepper. If you like other South East Asian food, I would urge you to give Lemongrass a try. Everything was very clean and fragrant. In summary, less sweet than Vietnamese and less fiery than Thai, but really nicely balanced.
AN ENJOYABLE MEAL AT LEMONGRASS RESTAURANT IN CAMDEN. I’d heard so much about this little restaurant in Camden, so decided to check it out. So very glad I did as the food was amazing. My partner and I first ordered the special Treats B, as a starter, and we were delighted when a large platter arrived at our table with an assortment of the little ‘Treats’ – Little mini Somoza’s & spring rolls, superb button garlic mushrooms & pieces of leek cake – all delicious and with yummy dips. For our main, I ordered the Loc Luk steak which was recommend as a ‘must’ to taste and was tender and delicious. The assorted fresh vegetables which I chose were also amazing. My friend chose Spring Chilli Chicken, which he said was wonderful. The waitress told me that they had been opened since the 80’s and so I ask myself WHY did I not go before? I want to try everything on the menu, such as Lemongrass King Prawns and the Ginger Lemon Chicken. What also is amazing that there is just one Cambodian chef at the back of the restaurant. We went there on a Saturday and it was very busy, but with a wok in each hand he kept cooking frantically. The restaurant its self is fairly basic but pretty enough & the amazing food more than compensates for this. Our waitress was rather shy but very sweet indeed & did her best to cope at a very busy time. On the other hand another waitress who we heard being called Maria, was very chatty and seemed to enjoy serving the customers. We can’t wait to go back.
Almost empty restaurant but great food. Went to Lemongrass this evening. Only me and one other couple in this small restaurant, but it was a Monday night I suppose. Can’t fault the food. Cambodian fish curry was excellent
One of the best. This is the restaurant that we keep on going back again and again and again. Excellent tasty Cambodian cuisine. Lok Luk steak, fish Amok………..better than the one in Phnom Penh!
