There are a number of reasons why our meal might not have been up to scratch, but I’m still surprised just how poor it was.I lunched here with two friends not long ago. There was a big match on at Twickenham we were attending and, like a lot of rugby fans, we started at a pub in Richmond beforehand. To say it was packed is an understatement, but my friend had reserved a table in the basement bar in expectation of this.Perhaps because it was a match day they were turning over many more covers than usual and a canteen mentality had developed with food slopped carelessly onto plates and in meagre portions. Our friend was running late and because of the impending game, and with our eye on the time, we ordered without him. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, but seemed to be on duty both in the basement bar and the ground floor one.I ordered the scotch egg and the West Country chicken breast in broth, while my friend opted for the fish cakes and steak and ale pie with mash and gravy. Our starters arrived rapidly, exactly as we wanted. They were serviceable, unspectacular but OK. It then seemed to take an age for the mains to arrive. When they did a different waitress plonked them down and was off before we had time to react. We found we had both been given the same chicken dish and because of the time it had taken to get them my friend decided not to complain and stick with it. That was a mistake as the dish, if that’s what you’d call it, was tasteless and looked like they had taken one normal sized serving and divided it into three. A few, small stranded chunks of chicken abandoned on a smear of broth – not worth the cost of a pint let alone the 10 or so they were charging.By this time our other friend had arrived and had just enough time to order some London bangers and mash with red onion gravy. This arrived swiftly and, much to our disgust, looked great. We both sat their staring enviously at him and contemplating getting a hotdog at the stadium. The Orange Tree seems like a pretty nice pub and is obvioulsy very popular to drink at, but one particularly poor dish and lack of attention to our order coloured my view of it.If you’re going to eat there avoid doing so on a match day, is all I can say.
