We had been waiting with eager anticipation to dine at Birminghams latest offering and were not disappointed!A pre-dinner tipple at the Kurabu Cocktail lounge is an absolute must – wonderful views over leafy Edgbaston and beyond to the Clent Hills gives a true view of a green landscape that is Birmingham. There is a lovely selection of Japanese influenced cocktails and beers. Management could have been a little more intrepid by searching out a selection of Japanese gins and vodka’s in the cocktails, rather than the Beefeaters and Russian Standards of the world. But that is as picky as I’m going to get!Moving to the restaurant opens up another new dimension to the senses with beautiful sounds, lighting, decor and ambience. We tried a couple of dishes from each page of the menu with Wagyu beef sushi and black cod sushi to start… WOW! As time stood still, a subtle slow motion explosion of flavours came bursting through – heavenly…… this moment of subliminal suspension was interupted by a quick follow up of dishes including Scallops; Lobster in glass noodles; Prawn tempura and salmon. (Hint: Have a break between ordering your dishes – ours all came out pretty much at the same time)There’s another bar inside the restaurant and this is where we sat to enjoy post dinner drinks consisting of Sake and a Chocolate vodka martini… would I come back?I think you know the answer!!
I was fortunate enough to get a table at Rofuto on Saturday evening. The restaurant only opened a few weeks ago and so I was expecting some teething problems but I was pleasantly surprised.Firstly, we were greeted very well and taken to the sky line bar. We both tried a couple of cocktails, which both had an oriental theme to them. Delicious! We then went on to a glass of champagne, which arrived in a fabulous cute glass and a bottle of Japanese beer. I was taken back by the restaurant decor, dim lights with a pink tinge. And the bar area was really cool, I will probably eat at the bar next time I go.We had a selection of sushi, I highly recommend the wagu beef roll… It was probably the best selection of sushi that I’ve ever eaten.I had the lobster with spicy noodles for my next course, although quite a pricy dish, you could taste the quality. Our waiter, Callum, was great and explained the menu, fully and I made us feel very comfortable especially with all my questions about the food.As the bar, was so nice, we went on to have our after dinner drinks there. Ed, the barman, made me a white chocolate martini and my partner had some Saki. Ed was exceptionally knowledgable about drinks and In particular Saki. It was a pleasure to sit at the bar and chat with him.Overall, this is a restaurant that has to be visited. It’s cool, the food is different and your made to feel special.I’m already mentally planning a cocktail night out there with the girls 🙂 !!
