When a cuisine has been commoditised to the extent that Italian has in London, one is often skeptical about restaurants that profess authenticity. Luckily for La Barca, this label is not one they need to justify. Its owners hail from the quaint town of Lucca, and the standalone restaurant has remained in the family for generations. The waiter recommends the red wine from Montepulciano, which rings a bell from an earlier trip to Tuscany. The white tablecloths and dark wooden walls evoke nostalgia from the Italian restaurants that my family and I frequented in my childhood. The dishes are definitely pricier, but for two hungry souls at 11 PM, theres little scope to be choosy. The wine arrives and its well worth its price. We settle on the Insalata Tricolore as antipasti, and the Pulcino alla diavola, which is in the Carne section, for our mains. The starters are an interesting twist on the Caprese, housing fresh mozzarella, avocadoes, tomatoes and rocket leaves. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil are generously splashed on, because when in Rome. Ill admit that the dish is uncharacteristic of my usual order choices, since it’s fairly standard, but tonight the fresh flavours and light ingredients are appreciated. The chicken too is succulent, and the balance of herbs and chilies makes for a perky sauce. For one who is looking for an authentic and traditional Italian dining experience, I would definitely suggest this place. As for myself, it was late night hunger pangs that accidentally brought me here, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. saanyagulati.com

La Barca is an amazing find!. I’ve been missing a high quality Italian restaurant for some time and happened across La Barca by accident. My three guests and I were universal in our appreciation of the quality and innovation of the food. Also the waiters were attentive, purposeful and well directed with everyone knowing their job and doing it proficiently but unobtrusively.Watching them work making and serving dishes at the table was a Caberet in itself.I recommend their freshly cooked and prepared insalata di fruiti di mare which was the best I’ve had in more than 40 years of restaurant eating (photo below) also delightful is the attitude of the waiters and manager all of whom I thank for such a delightful meal. I’m due to return on Wedsneday and can hardly wait. See their website for their current menu. Although we just wanted a light meal when we saw what was available we had 11 courses between us thee bottles of excellent wine and three Negroni cocktails which was about 380 inc everything. Happy eating.28 Apr, 2014La Barca is an amazing find!. I’ve been missing a high quality Italian restaurant for some time and happened across La Barca by accident. /// OVERPRICED – to be avoided ///. This Italian restaurant, located just behind Waterloo station, obviously simply aims at ripping off genuine customers who happen to be in the area for theatre, a show or a night out.No starters, a pasta dish, a main course and a bottle of wine, no puddings or coffees resulted in a 85 pounds bill, including 12.5% service charge and a 4 per head cover charged. Shocking!Despite the food quality and the service being decent, the charges along with the dreadful atmosphere is enough to make me suggest to everyone, this must be avoided at any cost!
