My favourite pub in London, so lucky to be able to call this my local. Their beer list is absolutely incredible, one of the biggest selections I’ve seen. The space is amazing and their Sunday Roast is simply legendary. Save some space for pudding!

The Red Lion is a great spot for a delicious Sunday lunch. With lots of space in their airy, large room it’s a fun place to meet and mingle. For Sunday lunch they offer a range of meats and vegetarian options, all served with all the trimmings. Come hungry, because portions are generous. The wine list is solid, and the range of excellent ales and craft beers adds even more to a visit. Well worth a stop when you’re in the Leyton/Leytonstone area. countrymouseclaire.com

When my friend Matt told me that there was a fantastic pub with great food and atmosphere just a stone’s throw from Leytonstone station, I was skeptical. But he was right: The Red Lion’s street art adorned courtyard and spacious, warehouse-like interior made us feel as though we’d stepped into one of East London’s coolest pubs.A glass of Cte du Rhone and steak onglet later (with the most fantastic hand-cut chips, might I add), we were discussing art, home ownership, and other usually boring grown-up topics with much merriment and glee. While I was left disappointed by my limp ‘side salad’ – which consisted of a handful of watercress – the steak and chips made up for it. And staff are friendly and nice: profusely apologizing for running out of lamb (my first choice, which went to my husband instead, because I’m nice like that), they recommended other items on the menu with enthusiasm and knowledge. Definitely swing by in the summer – even a little sprinkling of rain couldn’t put us off our outdoor seats. angloyankophile.com

As a pub, the Red Lion does little to reinvent the wheel, and even seems to go backwards in terms of its menu. The pub itself had a nice charm and great range of seating both indoor and out. The service was friendly and the staff in good spirits, but this is unfortunately where the positives ended. The menu was small, and after viewing some of the orders around me I decided not to eat. The burgers looked cheap and uninspired. The pub bites seemed well overpriced, with a sausage roll costing 1 per inch. The prices of the beer were dear as well, and ones more suited to those of a tourist hotspot. Overall I felt that the Red Lion had good potential, but was quite some way from fulfilling it.

I think they have the potential for really great food, but they just miss the mark in some respects. A little more attention to detail on the menu could get them there though. For instance, their pulled pork burger could be served in a brioche bun, but instead it’s served on a cheap white sesame, which lowers the overall taste in my opinion. The skin on chips are really nice though and the staff all seem attentive and friendly.

Was ok but now not as good. Food menu is a bit small and not much choice
