A leafy affluent London suburb on a balmy Friday evening is always going to give a dining experience a head start, but the High Road Brasserie coasted home well ahead of expectations. Our hipster looking waiter told us it was his second day on the job, but we were unable to find any room for improvement in his attitude and engagement, sometimes lacking when venues take themselves a bit too seriously, which happily this one didn’t. Menu was eclectic, engaging and mouth watering, and the escargot and buratta dishes were verging on excellent, however completely outshone by the oysters which were the best I’ve had. Anywhere. Steak tartare was a B+, the steak wasn’t up to the rest of it, however by that stage I’d had too much wine and my mood was too rosy to care. This place works as an impromptu venue for a cheeky glass or as a special location for a special occasion. My advice? Treat yourselves.
Service was like they were doing you a favour. After reading most reviews, this is obviously a problem. I had the steak frites for lunch which was fantastic but this was over shadowed by the waiter who clearly disliked his job. What a shame.
