First time in Leeds and decided to go against the norm (ie avoid the chains) and noticed this little find after searching for Japanese eateries. Impressions upon entering this establishment was good. I liked the mini bridge that crossed over the carp pond. But thats where it ends. Our waiter informed us was that they were out of sushi. So we decided to go for ramen. Ordered the stuffed peppers (padron) and stuffed shiitake beancurd. Both came covered in oily batter that you would expect from the local chip shop. Then came the fish ball ramen. Tasty but wasnt expecting a beef broth?! To conclude if you want authentic Japanese cuisine…. avoid!
The restaurant is pure Japan, it has a koi pond and sunken tables etc- very authentic looking (I lived in Japan for 2 years so I know what that looks like). The food is very varied, there’s soba and udon but also bento. They aren’t 100% authentic but they are definitely as authentic as you could hope to get in the UK. The drinks menu is also very good; Asahi, sake, shochu and umeshu. My favourite thing about this place is the creativity and uni tatie they have taken in creating traditional Japanese food for vegan customers. I had vegan teriyaki ‘chicken’ and it was great! The bean curd rolls for starters are also vegan and I must say they sound awful but they taste SOOOO good. Even the meat eaters at the table loved them. The bill came to just over 70 for four people too, so it’s a really reasonable price for specialist Asian cuisine.
I have been here twice now and experienced the same thing both times. I’ve gone as part of a couple and also as a fairly large group for a birthday celebration. Both times the food was nice enough but the service so very slow. It took far too for each course to arrive and then getting the bill was just painful. I think we ended up spending 4 hours there in total…for a 2 course meal and the bill! I wouldn’t go if you’re in a hurry.
Years of shame. I love to vime to this restaurant, its my daughters favorite & mine for 12 yrs. i find their food quite superb although a bit expensive. However last night after we finish our orders we decide to order desert & green tea. When it was served my daughter saud how come your tea mom has got lipstick on it when u havent drunk it yet, i do know too my lipstick must have been wipe off after eating the food. They took it away and have me another one but I got paranoid i sniff the surrounding lid of the cup if it was fresh or not it diesn’t They must have just wipe it
Vile. Our starters (vegetarian spring rolls and onion lollipops) were tasty, as was the bottle of pinotage we ordered to have with our meal. The main courses, Bento Fishball Box and the Bento Eggplant Box, arrived and looked tasty enough. Looks, however, can be very deceptive. The fish (the ‘brown’, strong tasting bits had been used so it wasn’t a good start) had been micro-waved to death and was like tough rubber. I couldn’t bite pieces off because it was too rubbery, neither could I chop them with the chopsticks which were bending with the effort. Chewing it was no fun either as it tasted horrible. Managed two pieces before giivng up. Thr eggplant dish was like rubbery and greasy slop, inedible. We asked to see the manager but, on a busy Saturday night, there wasn’t one. We were offered 10% off the bill and were told that only the manager could authorise more than that. The inedible main courses came to well over 10% so we refused that offer and again demanded to see the manager. After over an hour of wrangling and threats from both sides to involve the police (to arbitrate from our point of view, to arrest us for not paying from LT’s), demands for my name and address (settling on being given and verifying by calling my mobile number) a member of staff, claiming not to be the manager, removed both mains from the bill.A horrible experience never to be repeated. A great pity as I’ve always loved Japanese food.
Hidden gem. I have been going to little tokyo for around 6 years now and it never fails to impress. The food is beautiful, the service is good and the restaurant is so quaint. Always a special treat. Chicken Katsu bento box is my favourite and worth every penny but i never manage to finish it, theres alot of food to get through but so worth it.recomend to everyone!!
I’ve been to Little Toyko twice and although i think the atmosphere and decor are amazing, i still think they could be a little more accomadating with the flexiblity of their menu.I absolutely love Wagamama’s but the main reason for this is due to the fact that if the customer asks for something extra in the dish, it should be added as the customer is paying and i feel Little Toyko lack this flexibility.I just feel that if your chef is confident in his or her cooking, making a slight alteration to a meal should be a problem.Overall, i would recommend trying Little Toyko for the decor and atmosphere but i was also say go to Wagamama’s first for the food!
