The French Pantry is a small bistro set in the heart of Ludlow, which has been listed in the Michelin Guide on several occasions. We have dined here three times, and every time the food has been superb. Characteristically French in character, there are about eight choices for each course, and there is a set price for two (21) or three courses. Having dined here previously, three courses are beyond my appetite, so we opted for the two. The food is not only exquisitely presented and full of flavour, the portions are very generous too.The restaurant has a variety of seating, but the majority of diners on our recent visit were couples. Music gently plays in the background and the whole restaurant has a great ambience. The complimentary fresh bread was a nice touch, and a good lead into the main courses. A good variety of dishes, from wholesome fish pies to chicken cassoulets, choosing a dish from such a list is tricky, but we eventually plumped for the Confit of Duck, and the Chicken with tarragon. The duck was exquisite, melted in the mouth, set atop of garlic potatoes and prune jus. The chicken with tarragon, peppers and sweetcorn, in a wonderful sauce, was equally impressive. The accompanying thin French Fries, and the generous bowl of seasonal vegetables (courgette, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and beans), were perfect foils for the mains.Feeling pretty full already, my wife and myself opted for light desserts, a homemade apricot tart, light and tasty, and a nougat with pistachios and almonds, with a raspberry coulis adornment, one of the nicest desserts I’ve had for some time.Couldn’t really fault anything about the meal, I just wished we lived closer!
