This excellent quality restaurant has prices that reflect its quality food. Given the area, it’s actually quite reasonable and these home cooked creations are hard to find. The food, which is very French, is cooked in an area the size of a large linen cupboard, and watching the chefs do 200 covers a night is like a front seat at the ballet.
The Dependable Artiste. I have been eating here for 30 plus years. Entirely dependable, simple French bistrot food, nothing more, nothing less, at very good value prices. Wine list is well chosen, if a little dull (but who can afford really good wine these days other than at home or in London Clubs?). Really decent vin ordinaire. Usually excellent special confit a canard — why do’t they have this available all the time? Also the cassoulet is really quite passable. This is the sort of place Paris used to have lots of, but now has very few of. All in all, puts the Cheval Blanc (nearby) to shame: their food is also good, but goppingly exopensive for bistro food. My only complaint is the awful paper napkins — start the fightback for PROPER linen napkins which are useful, unlike the paper which are not fit for anything unther than paper hankies. But this is true of too many restaurants.
Love this place. L’Artise Muscle is one of my favourite places in London, tiny place, friendly service and great if simple food. The best place for a quick steak and chips in Mayfair.
Keep clear Bogus French restaurant.. This is probably London’s worst restaurant. he owner a n Englishman has apparently been getting away with ripping off the general public for decades. Some have commented on how small the kitchen was well it is big enough to open second rate french tin food bought cheaply in Calais and passing it off as freshly cooked. The only French person was the waiter cleverly employed to give the illusion of authenticity. The wine is awful too . keep clear of this place, its owner should be put to the pillory. Food is fresh out of cheap tins, wine i is corked and not fit for human consumption
