Lovely people creating solid Thai in a cozy setting. Generous hospitality and good heat if you ask for it! Now the only Thai in town but definitely the good one.
An excellent restaurant. We come here every time we stay with my parents in Dorking. Last night the pork ribs, mushroom toast, pad Thai and sweet and sour pork were a hit. The food is nice and light and doesn’t feel as oily as many Thai restaurants. The service is also excellent. We will be back on our next trip!
Excellent. The only complaint I have about this very fine establishment is that one has to walk through part of the service area to get to the loo… a minor issue!I was wandering down Dorking high street with my parents and we decided to pop in here on a whim. We hadn’t been here before but we were having a hard time finding a restaurant that was serving late (21.30). We all had some experience with Thai.Despite being the last customers that evening in a largely empty restaurant, we were not in the least rushed or made to feel unwelcome. We all have very different and picky tastes but had no trouble finding interesting things on the menu. The wine menu was excellent as well. I would recommend eating in as the presentation and service was half the experience. But the food is nothing to sniff at either; very good value for money (Dorking usually delivers with London pricing) and delicious from the first course to the last. I will definitely be back here soon.
Dreadful food and very expensive!. This restaurant has some very good reviews so we decided to give it a try, having travelled in Thailand and lived in the London area we are big fans of the Thai cuisine so naturally we chose Sang Thai for a takeaway treat. The first thing to say is that the restaurant looks nice and was full of staff and customers. I was presented with two menus by who appeared to be the manager, i soon discovered that both are very different and the prices in both are according to him incorrect. A mix of excuses, discounts and on the spot quotes revealed that a small main dish will cost you a minimum of 6 but most are around the 9 Mark. Now that’s expensive by any standards! Whilst waiting i noticed customers at tables looked disgruntled and appeared to be making complaints. After a 20min wait (perfectly normal) we Took the food straight home where we found the starters for two (sang platter) very spongey and wet while meat offerings were either tough and difficult to swallow or sausage meat with peas wrapped in raw filo pastry. The Jasmine rice was normal boiled rice and overcooked. The pad Thai was congealed, rubbery and tasteless. For 9 we had a kang ped yang, (red curry with duck) this was tasteless, swimming in oil (50%) and the duck pieces were rock solid with almost raw skin. Finally the gai keowan (green curry) was again 50% oil with 50% green coloured coconut milk. We strongly discourage people from eating here as it charges top city prices for a very poor effort indeed
PROPER Thai food. In Dorking.. Sang Thai in Dorking serves about the best Thai food I’ve eaten outside of South East Asia. Their Gai Hor Bai Toey (marinated chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves) is sensational. As is the shredded green papaya salad. This is not the ‘Thai’ food you get in pubs – it’s not all red and green curries. The menu’s impressively diverse – and the presentation is beautiful. The food tastes like the best stuff you’d find in a Thai street-market, and it’s presented like the food you’d find in a 5-star resort hotel. And the staff are courteous and polite. My only criticism is that there’s not a beautiful jungle-fringed beach outside.
