You wouldn’t know this lovely little restaurant unless you are a thai food fanatic. So Sakunthala is situated at about 5 min walk from Barnes Bridge station. I would say that the flavours they bring to their dishes are beautiful. Hats off to their chef. We had the chicken Tom yum soup, Prawn som tham (raw papaya salad). The soup had some amazing flavours and the salad was refreshing. For the mains, we went for king prawn sambal and it was a little spicy but again totally satisfying in terms of the taste. The combination of jasmine rice and their red curry was good. I was pleasantly surprised with this little restaurant just round the corner to serve such delicious flavours in all of their dishes. The ambience is very simple and minimalistic. A 10/10 for the food. The service is good enough. Can be very cold during winters and the radiators are not sufficient sometimes.
A little gem and a surprise. Tiny but authentic, inexpensive and very hospitable Thai family cooking, widened by one or two Malay dishes, like the superb Laksa, a fragrant, coconut milk and noodle dish, containing chicken, tofu, and all kinds of vegetables and spices.. There are none of the usual economies grasped by the established and multiple Thai groups, for example, replacing the , green and pea aubergines essential to green curry with the European variety . The Amaranth family fly their produce in, each week, from their farm at home. Other specialities, you should go for, are the soft shell crabs Kathiam with garlich, sesame oil, spring onion and coriander, and the home made Gyoza dumplings and Dim Sum, both of exceptional quality. Ask for the famous but rare home made durian cream ice which, I never go without. and is not on the printed menu ,or one made from Thai mangoes, which have an intense flavour, far higher than the Brazilian or African ones sold in the UK. These make up for the usual absence in Thai restaurants of desserts., After a meal of such quality the total price is a final ,pleasant surprise.
