Went along to try the Monday Vegan Menu. Had the Gado Gado deep-fried tofu starter, Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Yellow Curry main, and Sticky Rice Pudding for dessert. All of them delivered in flavour and satisfaction. The curry did call for something more, but it was made up by the coconut rice pudding. The dessert was well worth the space reserved in the dessert stomach. The place was lacking ambience, but the service was nice. Feeling peckish on a Monday night? Check it out if you’re in the neighbourhood.
Having gained some notoriety when it was featured as a hidden gem in Olive Magazine a few years ago, Blue Ginger in Kings Heath, Birmingham specialises in providing authentic Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine.AtmosphereAlthough it was mid-week when restaurants are traditionally quiet, Blue Ginger was nicely busy, with most of the tables filling up over the course of the evening. Located just off the high street, this small restaurant is run by Singaporean owner Siew Kuan, with low-key but effective decoration that lets the food speak for itself.foodStarters range around 5 in price, perhaps the most intriguing of which is the carrot cake, which is a savoury mix of rice flour, carrot and spices that could easily be eaten for breakfast. Those that cant bear to choose might opt for the platter for two (9.95), which includes samples of three starters: chicken satay, fish otaks and a five-spice roll. The chicken satay has a lovely spiced flavour wonderfully accompanied by a peanut sauce. The fish otaks are described as a fish mousse and have an almost eggy consistency to them, while the five-spice roll of minced pork and prawns has almost a fruity flavour.Mains are reasonably priced, ranging from 7 – 10, although most benefit from an additional side dish. There are several mains on the specials board and the main menu has a good choice for vegetarians. The roast duck, rambutan and jackfruit curry was a delicious and unusual dish. Its red Thai-style curry was deliciously medium-spiced and although there could have been more of the roast duck, the sweet fruitiness of the rambutan and jackfruit complemented the sauce superbly and was finished off with sticky Jasmine rice. Another special, the prawn sambal, is a popular Malay dish with fresh, spicy notes, although more prawns would have been welcomed.Desserts change regularly, with at least one included on the specials board. A pancake-style dessert and brownie seem to be regulars, the latter being delightfully chewy but the raspberry sauce being a little too overpowering at times.drinksUnlike some venues in the area, Blue Ginger is licensed, meaning theres no need to bring your own. Theres a decent selection of wines as well as a good range of soft drinks. The spirits selection is limited and simply listed by the type of alcohol rather than the brand. It seems the drinks arent meant to be the star of the show, although Blue Ginger does offer a legendary singapore sling. For a shared starter, two mains with one side dish of rice, one dessert, a glass of wine and two soft drinks the price of the meal came to around 40.Its easy to see why Blue Ginger has received rave reviews. The food is delicious and a little more unusual that the regular fare on offer in most restaurants. The venues atmosphere lends itself well to most occasions, from a date through to a celebration with friends or simply an excuse to eat out. The food, whilst not over-indulgent, is good value for money. Definitely worth checking out. dinebirmingham.co.uk
Best restaurant in south birmingham. This is a fantastic restaurant in Kings Heath, and certainly our first choice for a Friday or Saturday night. The food is brilliant, tasty, well cooked, well presented and interesting and varied; the staff are pleasant, respectful, efficient and friendly. We love Malaysian food and we love this place!
This restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. The food is exquisite and presentation isn’t too over the top but is still nice. Hats off to the chef!
Good points: The restaurant itself is very nice. Food is tasty, but personally I’d prefer more flavour. I liked that after two courses I still had a room for the dessert. Bad points: The toilet is outside and it’s REALLY cold in it. Food is nice but I’ve had better, personally I like more flavour in mine. Generally 8/10 🙂
