Polite service by the gentlemen behind the counter. Always has a smile on his face. Sunday mornings is when I go to get my fresh katlamas which is very nice.
Have been going to this restaurant since I was 8 (I’m 47 now). Their Katlamas are the best , I challenge anyone to find better. I love the look of it and yes it’s a throw back to the 70s . It a classic amongst all the others in the area, i hope it never changes!
This place has been around since the 1960’s.My dad used to drag me to this place as a child on a Saturday to pick up their famous speciality…… Katlama’s Now for those who don’t have the first idea what these are (and many friends who visit from outside of Bham have never heard of them!) a katlama is a circular pastry filled with a spicy mince filling. It’s made up if layers of puff pastry that sandwiches a spicy minced lamb filling. It’s basically stuffed with the same mixture they would use to make seekh kebabs.Take a look at the picture to get an understanding. That’s not an actual picture of one from this place it’s from my old matey google. Now this place is like going back in time your greeted with tables that have a slab of glass on them with a table cloth underneath with a menu sandwiched between the two!!! Proper old school curry house look! Now this place is popular with a wide range of communities which is a reflection of the area it’s located in. On any given day you will see diners from many differing nationalities munching away in the food. Now katlamas are their signature special. This is what made them famous, I’ve been eating here for well over 25 years!! It’s clear that they sell a lot of katlamas there stacked high in the display normally around 50-70 made ready to be eaten!!! Now that’s a whopping amount when you consider that other restaurants that do make them will have around 5 ready made.So how do they taste????? Well I’m afraid to say it’s like a lucky dip!!!When there good they are awesome! When there bad they blow your mouth off with excessive chilli or other seasoning. So what’s behind this inconsistency??? I wish I knew serial why they can’t seem to keep them consistent is beyond me. At times I’ve had a katlama that spicy that I have to reach for milk to try and put out the burn in my mouth!!! But at 1:50 for one it’s a mistake my pocket is willing to tolerate!Anyway when there good there really good. Soft pasty with perfect mince filling served with a chilli sauce that you will see anywhere else it’s like a sweet and sour sauce bright red in colour with chunks of onion swimming around in it! Their Baltis are also good as well as their starters. However info find them on the spicier side but definitely spiced according to an asian palette so those who can’t tolerate a lit of chilli probably best to avoid starters as the mains can be spiced to yiur liking. The last of a dying breed a true old school balti house. I only rated it at 3.5 due to their inconsistency at times had that bit been an issue would have been 4 !
