Change of direction. This pub has been completely refurbished and now takes on a smart traditional London pub decor with fresh homemade English comfort food sourced from the best local suppliers and great Sunday lunches.
Such a shame. This place has potential to do really well but is let down by all the little things. They can’t decide wether they are a pub or a sushi restaurant. Loud music, overpriced, small portions and staff who play pool instead of serving. Over an hour wait (only 2 people dining) for Sushi. I don’t understand how sashimi can take 1 hour to make!!!! The food is fresh but I can only assume its because they catch it out back hence the long waits. Avoid.
Gastropub serving sushi. A nice surprise having sushi in an English pub setting. I ordered sushi and sashimi mostly, with some plum wines. The fish tasted very fresh, and the dishes were nicely presented. Quite charming for a relaxed week day evening and good value for sushi and sashimi. The service was friendly and discreet. The fact that it is a sushi restaurant isn’t obvious, as it has the traditional English pub frontage as it remains a pub called TheDuchess (recent new management), so you have to know about it – but well worth finding! I got there by catching the tube to Vauxhall, then getting the 344 virtually to the pub’s entrance (bus ride 3 minutes) – walking might take 15minutes from Vauxhall.
Up Town Japanese in Battersea local. Frankly, this is a triumph for Japanese food in a part of Battersea that is otherwise out of the way and in the shade of Battersea Power Station. But all good things are worth tracking down! I have tried other Izakaya style diners in London, and it seems fitting that this is actually in a pub – as Izakaya is a Japanese establishment for drinking with small plates of food. Their Japanese chef has cooked internationally and for central london restaurants (so I am told), and this would explain the dishes which pique with rock shrimps and black cod, and I would go there for the Snake rolls (crispy salmon skin) alone! I also liked the deep fried aubegine with grated daikon in dashi broth. You can tell that the food is skillfully prepared and fresh and authentic. They do Sun Lik beer (though not Japanese but from Hong Kong) on tap which I’ve never found before in London – they also have Asahi and Kirin on tap too, as well as couple of Clapham brews which I didn’t try.I would definitely go again, sit at the bar with a beer and a try few more plates from their menu which was quite extensive and averaged 3-5 each, obviously black cod was alot more (14)Bill came to 55 (for two people)I am glad not to see another chain sushi!!
