The Mandalay at 444 Edgware Road, London, closed in 2016 (from memory, it was October 2016, but I may be wrong). It has been re-established as the Mandalay Golden Myanmar Restaurant, 302 Kilburn High Road, Kilburn, London, NW6 2DB (tel.: (020) 3609-0692; Tube: Kilburn; London Overground Rail: Brondesbury). The quality of the welcome, service, food, and drink is as high at the new venue as it was in the old one.
This review will be helpful for people who are looking for authentic Burmese food! Do not go here! It’s overrated. I went to dine there today cause of all the hype about the only one Burmese restaurant in Lodnon but I wish I never went. It was a total waste of money! Not even close to authentic and overpriced. Portion size for that price is way too small! They just boil the chicken and mix it with sauce. I could smell the chicken..foul smell that comes from boiled chicken. Same with the fish. The only thing that was okay was the faluda. Never going back there.
I had high hopes for Mandalay but it really let me down. The food was below par on the basics(bread, curry etc). Service wasn’t good either. Wouldn’t go back.
I’ve often eaten Khowsuey and I’ve cooked it myself, but its never been an authentic Burmese version. So when I heard that there was a Burmese restaurant in London with homestyle food, I was intrigued and put it on my wishlist.Today I was in the Edgware Road area and so I decided to try them out.The space is tiny and seems cramped compared to the other sprawling Middle Eastern style restaurants on Edgware road, with just 28 covers in 2 rows, but trust me the food is worth it.Now don’t head here expecting very fancy cuisine, what Mandalay offers is soul food. Pure homestyle cooking. Earthy and finger licking good. Food you could expect your friends mum to cook for you. This was my first experience of eating authentic Burmese food and I’m completely hooked. We tried the chicken khowsuey, lentil rice, chicken samosas and chilli chicken which were all very good. But the bamboo shoot and mushroom stir fry and the tapioca pudding with Agar Agar blew my mind. The food was very light and easily digestible, so its definitely not your usual takeaway style food.We will definitely be back to try more of the food on offer. They do have a license and offer some wines, and the service is very friendly and homely. on.fb.me
Let’s be honest! This is the ‘only’ Burmese restaurant in all of London and thank God, what an excellent authentic one. I have been going to Mandalay for the last 3 years and I think I missed the earlier 5 years that I have been living in London. The place is so small you could almost walk past it without noticing but if you walk inside you are sure to return again and again. I have my standard dishes that I order – the cucumber and papaya salad, the vegetarian Khao Suey and the beansprout fritters. My husband loves the pickled lamb and we wish that they didn’t stop making those lovely naans. I can’t fault a single dish – in fact I love it so much I can actually be back every week for a quick fix. I like the food so much that the service or ambience goes unnoticed because what I am actually there for, is the FOOD. Dwight (the owner) is a super friendly guy and serves the food with passion. It’s a family run kitchen and you can see that they are there for their love for Burma and its food! I was almost in depression when they shut for 3-4 months for refurbishment. By the way, we also tried take away from this restaurant and each dish is packed really well as it is difficult food to be packed with so many condiments but it is – as amazing.
It used be the best authentic Burmese food place in town. Added to yummy food, was quirky n kitsch atmosphere. Alas, with refurbishment, it has not only lost its rustic Burmese feel but food portions have gone down dramatically while prices are being maintained. Perhaps, they can add few pounds but make customer feel more satisfied rather than go hungry.
Positive. Not a beautiful restaurant in terms of decor but very unpretentious cooking, a bit on the oily side though i found. dishes that stood out were the twice cooked fish and the aubergine with potatoes. quite good value for money though i may have gone slightly overboard wanting to try everything on the menu!
