One of the best dinners we have had on our trip.. had the steak and was well cooked. Entree of salmon was good and also tried the tuna. Wine list good and service attentive. Good alround.
Having been aManuka Kitchen fan from the (very) early days and seenJoseph andTyler(respectively matre d’ho and chef) going from strength to strength, I was very keen to try their new venture, Salt and Honey. So, it was with a high degree of anticipation that the sophisticated lady (SL) and I went down there for dinner on Friday night. The first appearance is of a friendly bistrot , cosy, with 2 tiny white garden tables outside. The place was full at 9 (always a good sign) and we were taken to the back of the restaurant underneath the mezzanine. I was a bit disappointed as it felt a bit claustrophobic with the low ceiling and no windows. I had booked a good week in advance and advised Joseph so felt a bit let down ( he wasn’t there on Friday though). We sat down and order were swiftly taken off a every eclectic and (very) appetising menu. Good choice of wines, most by the glass and carafe which I always like as it gives me a chance to sample a few .The food arrived promptly and…it’s fabulous! We shared a plate of scallops (juicy, fleshy with the flavours exacerbated by thelayer of lardo on top and thin slices of radish, all of that on a truffled veloute) , cured Beef with buratta (simple but soooooo effective when the products are top class) and a parmesan and bacon Broth. Broth? Seriously? Well, to me this was the star. It was on of these things that you just chose because at 5 you have to. But what a revelation: tasty, melted parmesan, bits of grilled bacon, succulent dumpling of chicken and a bit of orzo to add texture. I would travel just for this! I have NEVER tasted a broth like this anywhere! It s rustic, it’s punchy, it s packed with flavours and its cheap!By this time I was close to heaven but unfortunately we were like lobsters in a hot waterpot: the back of the restaurant was getting very hot and my wine (a beautiful Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was starting to bubble in the glass. What a shame.!Mains arrived (together with some ice for my water) . Wagyu Beef bolognaise pappardelle and Slow roast pork belly. Not the wisest choice whenone is already in need of a cold shower….But a very very goodoneif you like your comfort food. That bolognaise was just off the charts. I could have been in Bologne itself. I cant even find words to tell you how good those ribbons of pasta bathing in that rich, meaty sauce were! The pork belly was tender and crisp on the outside as you would expect, If I was being difficult I ‘d say it lacked a bit of seasoning (or maybe it was because the bolognaise was so good?) but don’t let that put you off. The carrots glazed in honey were perfect. The desert menu is simple but very effective.By that time we had found our way outside to cool down and we shared a lemon crme (gorgeous). Ihad a brief chat with Tyler and congratulated him becauseI thoroughly enjoyed eating there (despite feeling like he had roasted me in the oven downstairs).Greatfood( sometimes brilliant). Honestly priced. My only neg is the wine was suffering from being stored at back of restaurant where soaring temperature killed it. I did tell Joseph and I am sure it will be addressed immediately.
