A little hard to find on the first floor of the shopping mall that houses the Vue Cinema. The place looks good. Un-uniformed staffed nonetheless adhere to an all black dress code which makes them findable and look pretty cool. Service was casual but impeccable with new cutlery brought between courses. Tall picture windows overlooking Upper Street are lovely. Acoustics are horrible though. Food was mightily impressive. I started with the smoked iberico carpaccio. A dainty portion but a beautifully balanced dish. Slices of cured pork, dotted with homemade mayo, little balls of granny smith apple the size of garden peas, slivers of raw radish and pickled shallots, crispy deep fried shallots and a sprinkle of fresh baby cress. In terms of both flavour and texture a party in the mouth. My companion had that the courgette flower with goats curd and honey. Beautifully thin light tempura batter that didn’t taste greasy despite being deep fried. The honey and soft goat’s cheese filling made a lovely counterpoint. The micro watercress added a fresh green note. For mains I had the vegetarian roast artichoke served with roasted new potato and sauteed cavolo nero. I needed the salt shaker for this dish. The addition of toasted buckwheat added a nice crunchy bite. Not terribly exciting but nice. My companion’s order of truffle gnocchi was outstanding. Beautiful texture with respect to the gnocchi which can vary from pillowy to dense, depending who is cookng. The version at Jones and Sons was soft but really chewy so absolutely perfect for my taste. It had also been pan fried after boilng so that it had a crispy crust. Truffle flavour was pronounced and there were a lot of sauteed wild mushrooms and paper thin parmesan shavings. Great dish.We were too full to share a dessert. The house red is a reasonable 20 per bottle and very soft and well rounded. I’d come back in a heartbeat for their gnocchi.
