After all these years you’d still struggle to find a better pizza. The key to their loveliness is the simplicity, fresh flavours and in particular the use of green garlic – which I’ve always loved. I hope this institution of decades is around for many more.
Pizza Legends. Silver Dollar Pizza or SDP – legendary in the area. I’ve been going here for over thirty years. In the days before 24hr licensing we’d cruise past in our Mk1 Cortinas to pick-up beer and pizza to take on to that night’s party now I take my family there. Same decor, same pizza same front of house – Chris. OK I’m nostalgic and some friends I introduce dont get the obsessive devotion. Short menu, the pizza comes as it comes, start adding toppings and you get a big bill. No delivery (ok they did once during the World Cup) its their way or the highway. Went there a couple a of weeks back and Mr Nick (of pizza chef legend) was back behind the glass and a guy I played rugby with but moved away, as in 100s of miles, was in there having a pizza and taking half a dozen back for his freezer. He told me he did it every six months. Oh another story comes to mind. Met up with an old school friend for a beer and decided wed have a pizza at SDP anyway having not been in the place for ten years Chris remembered his favourite pizza straight off. Actually this can sometimes be an issue if for some weird reason you would want to change your favourite SDP. One time I walk in to get a take-away, stopped to chat to a friend who was eating-in by the time I got the the bar to order Chris already had my regular in the oven without realising I happened to be entertaining a veggie lady-friend that night. Could make a crude joke there about her having some sausage later in the evening in any case but I wont bother. The girls now my wife and not a veggie anymore. These guys are quick I never order ahead. Reliable good pizza. One day it will change and Ill be mightily pissed-off. While its there, a living and breathing legend try it. Think they might put drugs in it.
