Lucky Chip’s Donald Trump Burger (as endorsed by Donald Trump, apparently)!Aged beef patty (105g) drenched in bourbon and vanilla BBQ sauce, grilled onions, American cheese and huge hunks of pickles. Perhaps a little too sweet, but perfectly manageable in a small size. I’d have loved it even more with a squirt of mustard and some more crispy onions. sophielovesfood.com
You’d have thought that by now we had all had enough of burgers. That’s definitely not the case though in East London, as Lucky Chip have proven with their new residency, at Birthday’s in Dalston. We stopped by around 7pm on a Wednesday evening and easily found a table. It didn’t take us long to decide on what we fancied: Cheeseburger, Royale wit Cheese, Wasabi Ginger and Sweet Chilli Fries and Cheese Fries. Everything arrived pretty quickly and was presented nicely in an American-style basket. We both agreed that the Royale wit Cheese and the Cheeseburger were tender and juicy. Even though we had dreaded they would be the opposite, since we weren’t asked how we wanted them cooked (they turn up well-done with the odd bit of pink). The mustard and pickles in my Cheeseburger added a tangy aftertaste, but didn’t detract from the meat. Soft bun. The textures were a little off partly due to the diced lettuce (rather than a leaf) and the soggy bottom bun. The burger was a little greasy, but we all secretly love that really. Overall/? Better than other American-style cheeseburgers I’ve tried in London. The Royale wit Cheese looked might impressive and BIG! The thick bacon added a smokey taste, and contrasted well with the tangy Mayo and cheese. The burger-loving fianc said he would happily eat it again, and that it was in his top 3 burgers he’s had in London (and he’s been pretty much everywhere). Usually he would complain about wanting 2 burgers, but this was filling enough that he didn’t want for anything. Now, for the fries! The wasabi and ginger sweet chilli complimented each other well, with the sweetness of the gsc overriding the powerful aftertaste of the wasabi. A subtle, but pleasant flavour. Unfortunately we both agreed that we probably wouldn’t order them again as they were a little underwhelming (they sounded much more interesting than they were). Again, the Cheese Fries were a bit plain. They were covered in cheese, but could have done with being seasoned. This stodgy mass would have worked better with a stronger cheese (maybe blue?) or a side dip.We ended up paying 25 (without drinks) for everything. That’s not bad at all. I’d give the burgers alone 5/5, but the sides let the meal down. Still, we all know you’re not really going to visit for the fries. Will I be back? Probably! And I’m even considering ordering take-out tonight! bloomzy.co.uk
