This ended up being our local brunch place of choice on Saturday and we were quite pleased we chose it. I’m always a fan of sharing plates as I like sampling as much as possible too. Between 4 of us 7 plates was the perfect amount and happened to be 1 of everything on the brunch menu! A brunch review would be complete without a comment on the quality of their Bloody Mary’s so had to get one in the name of research… It packed a sharp spicy punch. Nice! Will definitely be back here and pricewise quite reasonably at 20 GBP per head roughly. Miso satisfied. misohungry.blog
Have been to White Rabbit four times and alway enjoy it. The food has been down a little once when I went the time before last , but they are definitely back on the money. Each dish was simple and very tasty. I like minimal fuze and clean flavor. Great wine selection as well, we had a Chenin Blanc. Well worth it and will be back.
Get the octopus. The food here is caravan meets your local Italian (mainly thanks to the non descript decor)Ingredients and dishes on the menu had me very excited. The final result was hit & miss. On the night we had Cured salmon & wasabi- subtle smokey need to the salmon, wasabi more cream than burn, but worked well. WinYellow tail tuna with cardamom- perfectly good tuna tartar ruined by globs of white cardamon glue. MissCourgette flowers- fried, great cheese. Nearly impossibly to screw up. WinDuck with pear- personal thing here, but the duck was too smoked for my taste. Others may disagree. MissOctopus with picketed potato- I would have happily had this with every course. Slightly (minuscule) amount of coating on tender octopus on a bed of pickled potato sticks with some sesame oil. Winner of the night. We had 5 dishes, they recommend 6 for 2ppl. It’s not as cheap as the small plates suggest. Would go back though.
Very unassuming, the decor is stripped back and clean. But then the food coming out of the kitchen is pretty wild. The roasted watermelon is sort of their signature dish and is great, but the star of the show for me was the duck with miso barley. The banqueting menu sort of ramps up in savouriness peaking with the duck and then you’re brought back down to earth with the white chocolate ganache.
The VibeIts an uninspiring walk down Kingsland High Street that leads you to this little shack of gastronomic heaven. There are numerous food credentials for which to love White Rabbit , which Ill be sure to get to. But on a surface level, its so great walking into another industrial chic dining room where youre not oppressed by the modish trimmings. Had I not pointedly cast the critics eye over the interiors, I wouldnt have remembered a single facet, except the feeling of being deeply at ease, watching the vacant street through a glass faade and waiting for my date to arrive. The lack of frills, even when it comes to the menu, means that you relax in less than 5 minutes a triumph considering you are sitting opposite each other, across a white tablecloth, interview style. With a 35 taster menu, the prices wont threaten the deep calm that presides, nor will the portion sizes (theyre smallish). Were it not for the nearby post-production crew living it up in mis-matched glory, Id say this was a dulcet initiation into hipster life. The OrderMake life easy and order the taster menu. Cocktails are OK but this is more of a wine by the reasonable bottle kinda place. Kicking things off with tall pork scratchings and fluffy fresh bread, we moved from an incredible mullet ceviche to gin and beetroot cured salmon, working our way up to a divine duck breast via the creamy stretched curd cheese with squash and pumpkin seeds. This food is terrific. The GameAint nothing romantic about walking hand in hand from Dalston Junction so meet in the restaurant. Whoever gets there first, face the window and gaze out its a far more serene way to wait than playing with your phone. Youll be working through the courses for a couple of hours so dont use your best stories/gags too soon. A nice rule of thumb here is to move from food chat (Im excited about course x) to serious catch ups (what are you up to atm?) to humorous anecdotes, resting on euphoric silliness as the dessert course arrives. Play pat a belly, tease them about theirs, suggest you sub the pudding with scotch, you cheeky bugger. Youll leave and decide to grab a post meal drink but walking down the road to look for it will kill the mood. Activate your cab app and take it to Casa Negra in Shoreditch, where you can bathe in darkness, polish off a margarita and make out like kids. The FaultsThe cocktails arent the best Ive had but with food like this you dont need such a precursor.Sex Factor5. Maybe not that night, but within 10 days. Its bonding, man. socialconcierge.co.uk
WHITE RABBIT – REVIEW – 25TH FEBRUARY 2014Last month I had the pleasure of visiting a restaurant Ive wanted to try for quite a while – White Rabbit in Londons Dalston.Situated off the high street down a quiet street with a plain grey front and small sign, you could easily miss White Rabbit. But their simplicity is part of their style and is extended inside with white walls, old wooden chairs and bar stools and exposed metal beams. We were seated at a nice table for two in the window and the restaurant was quite busy for a Tuesday evening and had an easy and relaxed vibe. We were given the menu to look through and a quick glance had us both salivating. White Rabbits food is based around the idea of sharing and has a selection of Small and Large Plates along with a few nibbles or Straight Ups as they like to call them. I love trying different dishes and indulging in a bit of everything so the menu was right up my street. Whilst we chose what plates to get, we ordered some of White Rabbits bread and butter with Maldon Salt and some Sicilian Olives (both 3.50). The olives were plump and creamy and the homemade bread was warm and pillowy soft with the butter with Maldon Salt making it taste absolutely divine. Our Straight Ups coupled with a fine bottle of Italian Luccarelli (21) and the fantastic Northern Soul playing in the background, got our evening off to a very good start. After much deliberation and checking with our waitress if wed over-ordered, we finally settled on our chosen plates. From the Small Plates, we selected Roasted Watermelon, Black Olive Candy and Salted Ricotta (7), Gin & Beetroot Cured Salmon, Pickled Fennel, Dill Pollen and Pomegranate (7.50), Stracciatella, Sorbe, Squash Puree, Pumpkin Seed Crumbs (7) and Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Meade Puree, Mustard Seeds and Almonds @7.50). From the Large Plates we picked Duck, Beetroot Yoghurt, Roasted Beetroots, Kale and Hazelnut Crumbs (17.50) and Lamb Belly, Miso Baba Ganoush, Pak Choi and Meat Radishes (13.50). Our mouths were watering at this point and fortunately, as the dishes come out as theyre ready, we didnt have to wait long to dig into a couple of plates and the Roasted Watermelon and the Stracciatella came first. The watermelon was warm and the salty ricotta brought out the juiciness of it with the Black Olive candy almost having a popping candy like texture. The Stracciatella was creamy and smooth much like burrata and the sweetness of the squash worked perfectly with it.Next up was the Cured Salmon and the Purple Sprouting Broccoli. The salmon was definitely one of my favourite dishes of the night and it had an unbelievable clean, fresh taste and the earthiness and sweetness of the beetroot really brought out the fish flavour. The fennel and dill matched the salmon perfectly as did the pomegranate to the beetroot and it really was a pretty much perfect dish. The broccoli on the other hand, whilst working well with the almonds, was slightly too bitter for my tastes and the mead and mustard seeds were a little overpowering. Lastly came our large plates which were both presented beautifully. I had never tried Lamb Belly before so I was intrigued to taste it and it was much like pork belly but a bit less fatty and the lamb meat was unbelievably tender and similar to roast lamb. The baba ganoush and pak choi were the perfect accompaniments to the dish and their lightness balanced the whole dish out. The duck was perfectly cooked nicely pink and the flavours of the dish all complimented each other. The beetroot yoghurt was really refreshing and the nuttiness of the kale worked hand in hand with the hazelnut crumbs. We were pretty satisfied after this but something told us we must try pudding. I was very intrigued by the Goats Cheese Caramel, Blueberries, Toasted Almonds and Sorrel Granita and my guest opted for the Roasted Pineapple, Kaffir Lime Cream and Feuilletine. The pineapple was warm, chargrilled and juicy and the caramelised flavour of the feuilletine next to the citrus ice cream brought the dish together well. The goats cheese however was a bit of a let down and I found it far too rich and quite an odd flavour for a pudding, which was a shame. However, goats cheese pudding aside, White Rabbit was a real joy to visit. Its exciting and unique, intelligent and detailed and pushes boundaries with food. They also offer a 7 course tasting menu for 35 per head which I think is an absolute steal for a restaurant of this quality and I am definitely going to book in to try it very soon. dottydishes.tumblr.com
