Best locally but…. I love Oisi and we regularly get take away from here for lunch at the weekend. I’ve been to lunch and dinner a few times and the food on the most part has been delicious, but we have found the service and food sometimes doesn’t come out to order – e.g. I had a hot beef dish that came out cold and when I asked they said it can be either and that it is served cold unless you ask for it hot – BS as far as I was concerned, they were just covering their tracks. It is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in the Guildford/woking/byfleet area but I hope they read this and spend a little bit more time on their food service.Beyond that the restaurant is family owned I think and they do make a real effort to be nice but could do with being a bit more upbeat – the location is a bit weird – a stairwell between a printers and some other shop that goes down into a basement – once you get down there it doesn’t matter though.Overall I’d say if you live in the area you HAVE to go and try it out as it’s great japanese food without the london prices (will still cost you a fair bit mind), BUT you might find that perfect japanese meal out might have a few little frustrations along the way but not enough to spoil the fantastic food in my opinion.Get the:black codtempura king prawnschicken gyozawagu beef (but ask for it hot!)
Almost there…. I’ll start by saying that I believe I need to visit Oisi again to finalise my opinion; however, there was a lot they got right on my first visit. The location of Oisi may put many visitors off – it is sandwiched between two gregariously signed computer shops (and being a basement unit, is simply a door – see photo). This does Oisi no favours and is a shame because despite first impressions, there is the good solid Japanese restaurant beneath this external dcor. Onto the food – we had edamame (past their best, the beans were slimy), gyoza (both chicken and veg – excellent on both counts), tempura (the fat wasn’t hot enough, so the batter suffered as a result – it wasn’t the worst I’d had but it wasn’t up to standard), various sushi and sashimi (enjoyable and tasted fresh – which is the key) and dessert. As it was lunch and Oisi were not busy (not surprising for a weekday, in Byfleet, at a Japanese restaurant!) and I attribute the poor tempura to this. No doubt the fryer was turned on for this one dish and it suffered as a result. Whilst sitting in Oisi, the phone was often ringing, with reservations being taken and therefore, my guess is that during a busy dinner service, the tempura would be excellent. As said at the start, Oisi is one I’ll be glad to try again, despite some minor issues.
