Anh Dao is not my favourite Vietnamese on the Kingsland Road strip, but they do have a few standout dishes that I come here especially for. Of the BYO places on the strip, Ahn Dao has the best acoustics. A lot of the other places which are pleasant during the week are a terrible din at the weekend. You can actually have a conversation at Ahn Dao, even when the restaurant is packed on a Saturday night.The dishes worth coming here especially for are the Aubergine with Chopped Meat (pork), the starter of Crispy Fried Eel (I haven’t seen this dish elsewhere) and the Char Grilled Monkfish Slices. The last time I ate here, we actually ended up having a second order of the aubergine and pork when there were just the three of us. It was that good. They also do exotic shellfish, such as langoustine, lobster and whelk which you won’t see on most menus, but be warned that the portions sizes for the exotic stuff can be rather dainty. I remember being once disappointed by my fried seafood kway teow here, as it was a bit bland.Most of the standard dishes are on par with offerings at other restaurants. The salads, stir fried greens (morning glory, spinach or watercress), and soft shelled crab have all been good. Anh Dao is a BYO with corkage charge of 2 per head.
