Looking at the reviews here, they all seem pretty old and I’m really surprised by them!I really enjoy Bacchus Sundays. They happen to be in my local, which is how I came by them. I’ve always had a really decent roast there (at Howl at the Moon in hoxton), they also have live Irish music on Sundays which is a bit of fun. I’ve never been disappointed in their roast. I usually go for the pork. It comes with all the usual veg, including crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy inside; succulent meat and a decent bit of crackling. When I’m really hungover, or really hungry, I get the whole damn farm which has a few different meat on it. Love the gravy, I usually ask for extra because I like my food to be drowning in it. They do a cracking scotch egg too!I’ve also been to on at the George and Vulture. Never been disappointed. Those that have had bad experiences all seem to be from a while ago, I’d suggest they give em another go.

Fantastic roasts, from the quality of the meat veg to deep gravy. Service was spot on and a great wine recommended. Ambience was perfect too, a nice buzz but still able to have a conversation. A sunday well spent!

Being a big Sunday roast lover (and who isnt?) the thought of finding a place which specialises in making them sounded perfect, so I was excited to book Bacchus at their new place just around the corner from their old location on Hoxton Street for a Sunday evening as I had read rave reviews about them. Not wishing to sound snobbish, but when I arrived at the Lion & Lamb pub where Bacchus is now based, it doesnt shout Hoxton cool more council estate working mans club. I know this as I have frequented a few in my time. I dont really care about surroundings, but I do care about a fine roast dinner! Unfortunately this is something Bacchus are not capable of. I ordered the roast beef which as you would imagine was listed as including a Yorkshire pudding, however I was told they had run out. Now this is my first nitpick, the place was almost empty (I should have read that sign), the fact that they ONLY do roasts and that I had bookedhow on earth do you run out of an Sunday roast essential? Simple they told me, they have no kitchen and everything is shipped in through the back door. Oh so not made fresh then? When it finally arrived the merge portion of food was at first disappointing but it actually improved the situation for me as when I started eating I realised I wanted this plate leave my sight and mouth as quickly as possiblelet me explain. Watery vegetables verging on the school dinner variety were lightly covered in tasteless gravy and most unsatisfying. I was going to suggest to them they could improve things by heading round to their local corner shop for some Bisto, yet I carried onThe beef had undergone hours of slow cooking according to the menu, yet mine was extremely rare (not a bad thing granted) but also amazingly had nearly zero flavour and if there was any it was too under attack from the intrusive herb crust to make an appearance. My partner had the nut roast (shes a veggie) and I must say what it lacked in any flavour whatsoever it made up for in entertainment, as we spent quite some time searching for any nut like substance within the bland rice based dollop on her plate. Having no Yorkshire (GRRRR!), I only had the roast potatoes to fall back on. Oh dear. They confirmed the waitresss revelation that the food is cooked offsite as they had the crumbly texture inside and odd taste you can only achieve through repeatedly re-heating.I was asked if I would like some horseradish sauce, of course I thought, anything to make this even a little bit more flavourful and exciting. Good idea right? Wrong! The horseradish sauce was spectacularly bad, it was basically sour cream with the lightest, near undetectable, hint of said horseradish. Again thoughts of sending them to the local shop popped into my head.Overall I would suggest you give Bacchus a wide birth as the quality and execution of something they claim as a speciality is simply awful, and their offering must rate as one of the worst roasts available in London. I do have a constructive message for Bacchus if you fancy moving again can you please make sure its as far away as possible. foodontheblog.co.uk

I have been coming to Bacchus on and off for the past few years living in the area. I loved the pub on Hoxton Street and I love their new pop ups, not wanting to lose the place completely it’s a lovely way to get your Bacchus fix.I’ve followed them to the Hoxton Street Studios which was an impressive venue and last week I went to the Lion & Lamb pub which is where they are currently shacked up! Always lovely staff, always lovely food. I would recommend to anyone – and now they open until 8pm!!! The pop ups offer a limited menu on food and drinks and you may need to wait a little longer but they all try their hardest and it’s worth it in the end 🙂

I used to really like Bacchus when it was a gastropub on Hoxton Street. Their food was consistently good and their triple cooked chips in beef rendering were among the best chips i have eaten in London. Was sad when they closed down in December 2013 due to an offer from a real estate developer that was just too good to refuse. Having previously only eaten at Bacchus in the evenings, I vowed to try one of their regular pop up Sunday lunches in 2014.I was sorely disappointed with our Sunday roast today. I ordered the pork belly and both my companions ordered the lamb. Portions were quite modest, with very little vegetable. I had three small pieces of roast potato, a sliver of dressing, two slices of beet, three baby carrots and maybe a tablespoon of braised shredded overcooked cabbage. The roast garlic on the menu did not materialize on my plate. My pork was alright, but the crackling was tough rather than crispy. My companions both complained about the quality of the cut of lamb. Rather a lot of fat that had to be cut away. The potatoes were not crispy, being smothered in gravy. In fact, everything was smothered in gravy, which I wish had been served separately in a jug. Worse yet, the potatoes had that telltale grainy texture I associate with having been reheated after cooling. The Yorkshire puddings that accompanied the lamb, being big and fluffy, were the best thing we were served..Customers should be aware that the location can change. Although the website listed a site on Hoxton Street, once we got there, a sign directed us to another venue on Fanshaw street a few blocks away.
