Not exceptional: we ordered one of the bowls and lemongrass chicken with egg fried rice as mains and prawn crackers and dumplings for starters. The starters were below the expectations, the crackers didnt seem fresh. The mains were good but not very exciting. In the end we had a service charge added to the bill – I prefer when you can decide on the tip instead of having it imposed on you.

Cay Tre ranks amongst the best Vietnamese restaurants in London- but I question why? The food was mediocre with a few oh-so-good dishes to spare. Whilst most of the reviews raved about the food, quite a few highlighted their horrendous service that I got to experience today and I abhor bad customer service!Ambience: AverageFood/Drinks: GoodService: Poor- AverageValue for money: GoodMy recommendation: they have decent cocktails. The food, honestly is a hit and miss. Really depends on what you order.

The food itself was fantastic. They have a brilliant menu and it tasted great too. The fault I found with this place is that the staff were rude and did not miss a beat in clearing the table as soon as id put the final bite in my mouth. This place does get busy but I’d expect to feel less rushed.

Saturday night is very busy at Cay Tre in Shoreditch -unsurprisingly so given it makes delicious Vietnamese food at decent prices. Service was a mixed bag. We had a waitress who tried quite hard to persuade us not to order any of the more exciting things on the menu because she insisted we wouldn’t like them. We didn’t listen to her, and I’m very thankful for that because we enjoyed everything we had. There’s a lot on the menu and I look forward to going back to sample more of it!

Having read the previous reviews I had high expectations of some great Vietnamese food, but sadly did not get it at Cay Tre. There was nothing wrong with it per se, but I have had a lot better Vietnamese food. The single grilled scallop to start was ok but lacked flavour, punch and was a little over cookedThe Saigon beef short rib stew should have been full of flavour, but lacked punch again, was not a rounded deep flavoured dish and the rice I had to go with it was ok. Also it was not pipping hotThe scallops also cane out the same time as the main, definitely rushing through to turn tables.Overall, lacked spice (not just heat but spices to create a deep round flavour) and temperature, a bit disappointed. themrsmith.me

I have had my eye on Cay Tre for quite a while and today is the day! We arrived before the evening rush around 18:30 I think. A table was prepared for us and we were seated promptly. The menu was an interesting one and it took me quite a while to grasp it. I eventually decided to get the Bun Sa with tofu. As we sat and waited, all the reservations stared coming in and the queues formed outside. Our food all came out gradually and I got agitated because I wanted to eat my food whilst it was still warm. My bun sa was lovely. I added hoisin sauce to the tofu bits and it complimented the dish well. The people I was with didn’t really enjoy their food because I guess the flavours were too strange. Which I understood because the spring roll had a very distinct flavour that I could not stand. Overall, very busy restaurant and I am not sure why. Maybe it is an acquired taste that we just do not have. Also very lovely service! Our waitress was very friendly.
