Decent simple grub. The two of us had two orders of wings, one with Nina’s honey and scotch bonnet sauce and the other with the lemon thyme sauce. We also shared some sweet potato fries and a coleslaw.Wings were tasty due to the sauces and meat was succulent but the skin was not crisp. Good marks for flavor but meh on texture. We both preferred Nina’s sweet and spicy sauce over the lemon thyme. Really big portion of sweet potato fries. Nice and crisp. Slaw was based on mayonnaise but very fresh due to a nice amount of acidity in the dressing. Very crisp cabbage so dressed at the last minute. I was a big fan of the slaw. It’s inexpensive. We used a Tastecard, but at full price our food for two would have been 21 before service. As I am currently walking on crutches having recently had knee surgery, I am discovering that a lot of restaurants in London are not handy for the disabled. There are 5 rather steep steps up to the venue and no handrail.
I know Hoxton 7 well. Throughout the week it is a drinking spot with dancing on the weekend. In terms of food, they had their regular Shoreditch Pizza as the go to option, but now they have shaken things up with the recently introduced Cluk Shoreditch, a permanent pop-up serving, yes you guessed it, chicken. Get your poulet on with some wings, a burger, grilled strips or breast. Slap on some sauce, with atomic, Jamaican jerk, lemon and thyme, Nina’s or Grandad’s BBQ. I had to try the butterfly chicken breast with Jerk sauce. My heritage is an island hop away, so I am familiar with this spicy dressing. My partner in crime for the night went for chicken wings in Grandad’s sauce, which our waiter proudly told us had some good ole dark spirit in the form of Bourbon. For sides we had coleslaw, sweet potato fries and mac n cheese. The food was amazing. My chicken breast was tender and moist. Whilst a key ingredient of Jerk is scotch bonnet, it was not nearly as spicy as I feared it woud be. It was just spicy enough. The sweet potato chips were mindblowing. Served hot, not soggy and cold like in some places. Pollie was chuffed with the amount of meat on her chicken wings, in this place, they certainly share the wealth. Her wings were a perfect combination of bourbon versus bbq and tanginess versus sweetness. The mac and cheese was an obvious indulgence. Creamy, cheesy and crunchy on top, we were delighted with our choice. The coleslaw served as a nice cooling agent for the little bit of spiciness. The concept for Cluk is Southern American fused with Caribbean and Latino flavours, so it is fitting that the food has a bit of a kick to it. It’s home is an informal lounge bar with velvet booths and wooden tables. The style of the food lends itself to its surroundings being no nonsense solid grub. It is a one stop shop for an evenings entertainment. Line your stomach with some wholesome food, experiment with some cocktails and then join the DJ with some dancing to dance.
