Really good Vietnamese food on the infamous Kingsland Road strip. If you’re in the area and are looking for something quick, easy and delicious this street just off Shoredtich High Street is your one stop shop. Vietnamese has quickly become a favourite of mine due to the amazing flavours, huge variety of food and its so cheap! Cu Tu is one of the many along this street and like the majority it was very busy even on a Wednesday night. We decided to try it out and see how it held up to its competitors. The restaurant is not that big but nice and cozy and well lit so you don’t feel too claustrophobic. The staff are efficient and the food is delivered quickly. The food was delicious; we ordered the spring rolls and the fresh summer pork and prawn rolls to start. Both were fresh and tasty. I had the stir-fry chicken with lemon grass and chili for a main which was not as flavorsome as I expected and not that spicy but still good. My friend ordered the beef in betel leaves, which was amazing and caused some serious food envy! Only complaint was that they forgot to bring out one of our beers, it eventually arrived and was not added to the bill, which was nice. All in all not my favourite on Kingsland road but very good all the same! Cost for two: entrees, mains and a beer approx. 25 pound.

Decent Vietnamese although not my favourite on the Kingsland Road strip. Being further north, it is less crowded than several of the other options. There are a couple of reasons to seek out Cu Tu especially, though. The banana blossom salad is unusual and not on every menu. Also the deep fried whole fish dishes (try the sea bream with mango) are filleted before frying and then served in a nest constructed from the sculpted fried skeleton. Beats having to fillet the fish yourself at the table, which is the case in most of the restaurants on the Pho Mile where this type of dish is concerned. This restaurant is a BYO.

I asked my friend from Hoxton to recommend me the best Vietnamese on the Kingsland road and after a few drinks on a Thursday night we did one better and went together. This was her choice, but sadly I wasn’t as impressed. Sure, it was good and portions sizeable and BYO, but the food wasn’t up to my expectations of the best. I had a Vietnamese golden pancake that was basically a pancake wrapped around a stir fry and not much more. The beef and galanga curry I then followed it with was OK but a bit too viscous for my liking. I was looking for something a bit measured and more unique but Cu Tu was quite as good as say Banh Mi Bay in Clerkenwell. However it was still OK and without the uncomfortable hustle and bustle of the two Tay Dos down the road. londoncurryblog.com

Super busy when we went but worth the wait. Great good – bring your own drinks.

A lovely atmosphere and the best hospitality you could ask for. Cu Tu is one of the newer spots on Kingsland Road. I was tempted to try one of the more well known names, but spotted this on my way and decided to pop in. Tom, the manager is a delight. The food was delicious and all so reasonable priced with an additional 10% off. I’ll definitely be going back. The Dry Chilli Squid is a must!
