Kingsland road is tough competition for Vietnamese food. This place looks like it’s had a makeover and it’s way more appealing. For a Friday night I found the service very slow. It took a while to get our order in aswell as the bill. But the costs for this place are cheaper then the rest on Kingsland road and the food is just still as authentic. I would say this place is great value for money.

Cheaper than most of the other Vietnamese restaurants on the strip. However, my order of rice noodles with seafood was a little bland, and didn’t contain much seafood. Portion was small too. It’s a BYO, but the corkage fee of 2 per person is somewhat steep. Corkage was charged for everyone at the table, regardless of whether they were partaking in wine and would require a glass.Atmosphere was laid back and more bohemian than the other Viets on the Kingsland Road strip.

Hanoi Cafe is quite under rated. It doesn’t stand out from the rest. It was recommended on my recent trip to London by a French girl we just met who eats there often. It has a homely setup and nothing too fancy. The menu is quite extensive and there should be something for everyone. I ordered a hot prawn dish (discovered afterwards the rice was charged separately). I could definitely taste the chili in it, which was prefect for the cold night. The place had a relaxed atmosphere and was full of people who were regulars, based on what I saw and them knowing what to order. Our friend ordered a DIY dish where she rolled her own spring rolls with rice paper. It was a fun evening. Definitely a place to try if you find yourself in Shoreditch. Prices are great too, for London standards (and being a foreigner). nafisa.co.za

Hanoi Cafe is one of the series of Vietnamese restaurants at the beginning of Kingsland road, and I am afraid it is definitely not among the best ones. We chose this place randomly, thinking that the quality should be approximately the same in all of these places..well, not quite. Hanoi Cafe is substantially cheaper than the others, but the food is so mediocre, that you end up wishing you paid slightly more next door but ate something more palatable and safe.We ordered bun (rice vermicelli) with grilled fish with dill, however the fish came deep-fried instead of grilled, and with no traces of dill visible. There weren’t any fresh herbs that almost any Vietnamese dish is traditionally served with you would need to pay extra 2.5 for a plate, and all we got with out bun was some simple shredded lettuce. The second main was duck coconut curry not much to comment, just another average dish. I left the cafe wishing I have not eaten at all, with a bitter aftertaste of disappointment and regret: having spent a month in Vietnam it’s a shame to make such a bad choice when in London. superfoodie.org

Love this place. Been going for 15 years on and off. Lucy and Helen are the best. Cannot recommend highly enough.

My fav. Out of all the places i have tried along kingsland road i like hanoi cafe because it is cosy and simple. it doesnt try too hard to be something else…..the quality of food is on the same level as all the other cafe style places. i have even been able to bring my own alcohol in so thats been a bonus. i love the guys that run the place and i always recommend my friends here. i guess everyone has their own favourite spots and this happens to be mine

Feel like I need to rewrite my review when I said it does not look good from the outside. This was badly written what I meant to say is that it does not look like a fancy restaurent like the ones with the annoying waiters (who stand on the street). But the food is amazing even though I always have the same dish, friendly staff. Hope I didn’t offend them with my last comment. Don’t think I could live with myself. If the owners of my favourite restaurent hated me26 Apr, 2009Great food great price very friendly staff. Does not look like a great restaurent from outside compared to other restaurents on street. But food is great. Well worth a try
