Death by Burrito, and Square Pizza have all departed as kitchen residencies at Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen. This is a review of the current residency, Smokey Tails, an American BBQ joint.I had been admiring the menu at Smokey Tails for some time, so I was rather sorely disappointed by my lunch today. We probably didn’t order well and should have stuck to slow cooked red meat which seems to be their speciality. We shared a small fried chicken, a small smoked buffalo wings, the charred vegetable salad and rosemary fries. The best thing on the table were the crunchy fries, although I couldn’t really discern any flavor of rosemary. The next best thing was the fried chicken which was a nice texture. It tasted of having been brined and dredged (not battered) before frying. Skin was nice and crunchy though I felt it needed a dipping sauce. I disliked the texture of the buffalo wings which had a flaccid skin. The slightly smokey flavor and the coating of Frank’s hot sauce were okay. No ranch or blue cheese dressing and celery sticks were provided with the buffalo wings, which was a disappointment. Salad of charred veg was quite unpleasant. Cold cooked bok choy, broccoli and leek dressed in oil, raw ginger and black sesame. No seasoning, no acidic note. There were some un-toasted cashews in the salad. An ingredient list that read well on the menu but was yuck in reality. We had considered a large order of the salad but were glad we only had the small portion. It’s not expensive. Lunch for two with tapwater and service was 24.
I went there last year for my birthday. I was looking for a place which can accommodate 12-15 people. When we got there we realized it was just us in the restaurant so there was no need for reservation. I’ve realised later on that Sunday in Hoxton is very quiet, not many bars opened and the atmosphere in the whole area is so sad that I literally was depressed after that night. The food, as we expected came very quick and the staff was attentive considering that we were their only clients. We tried burritos, tacos and quesadillas and everything was very tasty and filling. There’s another room in the building where they have live gigs with pretty good bands. I suppose the atmosphere is more lively in any other day but not a Sunday. So if you want to go and try the food and have few drinks please do but avoid the Sundays.
Delicious food and great cocktailsHoxton Square Bar and Kitchen or also what we thought it was called, Death by Burrito is a great place to come for a night out with friends. Great cocktails and delicious snacks. The interior is really cool and well spaced out, they have an excellent outdoor area with picnic tables and heaters and also next door is a larger bar, great for continuing on to after dinner. The staff were really friendly and accommodating for our large group of ten people. They were happy to recommend cocktails and food. We started with a Torreador cocktail, which is apparently like a margarita but better and was recommended by our waiter. It was delicious although not really anything like a margarita. The cocktail list is really great and inventive with a few classics with a modern twist. The food is very well priced (6 pound for fish tacos), although this is reflected in the size. I would recommend ordering things to share or two dishes perhaps. The Fish tacos were amazing! Very small soft shell tacos with shredded lettuce and chipotle mayo and fresh fish battered and fried. We also shared some mexi fries which were normal fries drenched in herbs, rather spicy but very good. Would definitely recommend particularly before a night out.
I actually end up in the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen quite a lot – especially when we’re in the area but haven’t made specific plans. It’s always lively yet not too packed and the drinks are decent and reasonable for the area. I’ve seen a couple of gigs here too – they’ve got a great space for lesser and slightly better known bands. Just recently, Death By Burrito (who used to be at Catch) have moved in to the Kitchen part, serving up decent, if small burritos, and other dishes from their recently launched cookbook (some things were better than others when I tried it – I say, stick to the burritos). It’s worth venturing this side of the venue just for the cocktails though, created by none other than Mr White Lyan himself, who is has a deservedly decent reputation for mixology based on these. Every cocktail I tried was delicious but the Ring-a-Ting-Ting was something else. jaminaward.wixsite.com
Very nice place. Quite noisy but very warm. I love the decor, the waiters are lovely and take the time to talk a little with you. Reasonable prices, good burgers and salad chicken cesar incredibly good!Behind the main room you will find another room that often hosts live music bands, I think the entry is 5 and the atmosphere is great!
A safe bet for good food and people watching. This vibe is just on the comfortably side of cool. The menu isn’t fancy, but they get it right. (And the fennel salad with parma ham is, surprisingly, divine.) The service can be a little sporadic and disengaged, though, so don’t come if you’re in a rush. But if you are in a rush, why are you hanging in Hoxton Square? Order another drink, watch the drunks in the park, and try not to think about how you’ll get home. All in all, a consistently good meal in a chill environment.
