I visited during a guest 3 Michelin starred chef service. Coz I’m geeky like that it was the first service!!!! What an amazing experience. Staff were so attentive and the chef even came to our table! We had VIP treatment and the food was incredible. We ate from a special menu from the guest chef, but the restaurants food also looked really good. Such a great experience. foodobsessedsam.wordpress.com
L’Anima is all class from the moment you walk through the gigantic single-pane glass door and step into a bar and dining area which is thoughtfully minimalistic and sleek. This translates into a menu of authentic, honest dishes as the soul of Southern Italian cuisine is transported to East London. The meal was near flawless. Cooked at a perfect 135 degrees celsius, the fritto misto was as plentiful as the ocean and ranks as one of the best I’ve ever had. Pappardelle with duck ragu and pistachio was a perfect al dente and so rich it left me scrambling back for more. But it is their signature Scotch beef tagliata with marrow bones, buffalo blue cheese and fresh cherries which proves to be the ultimate showstopper; beef so tender and soft, you barely need to chew, accompanied by side dishes which on their own is worth of being on the menu. Someone pinch me. Finishing with a white chocolate semifreddo with topical sorbet, I reflect on a meal which was an absolute triumph and worthy of consideration should you have a special occasion; the meal is by no means cheap but the quality is well worth it. Didn’t like it much. Service was poor & preparations weren’t good too. Wasn’t cheap at all and staff wasn’t prepared to help much on vegetarian requests. Restaurant was almost empty on a dinner.
Definately should not have a star. Went for lunch, starters were too large but quite nice. The lamb for main was suggested at medium rare and came well done. Was not impressed with the service, the food or the dcor. Also found it annoying that the head chef stood on the floor watching everything and everyone while his kitchen team were in there over-cooking my lamb, isn’t that why you pay a general manager/maitre’d. Priorities are all wrong? All this outrage at it not getting a star is idiocy, it has the pretension to get one but fails to deliver on any of the other criteria.
Great food, especially the stuff which was assembled rather than cooked (excellent ham, best burrata ever). But super high prices, pushy service, noisy environment and brash city clientele will pit me off going back.
Bella!. (Visit 6/5/10) Tried something new & went for the octopus – smokey & delicious! All the mains looked great, carnivores should have the beef tagliata like me – very very good. Fish stew also highly recommended and we loved our sorbets to finish. The food here is wonderful, the service very good (particular nod to the sommelier) only small gripe, it’s a total city hang out & the cost discourages personal visits.
