Ruby in Shoreditch, just on a little side street called Charlotte Road, is a find. A loyal following frequent this spot throughout the day enjoying everything from a hearty breakfast to a freshly curated lunch menu. There are their regular dishes on the menu including a freshly grilled chicken with avocado salad or the Ruby burger, but then there is the daily changing pasta specials. As you pop into this little cosy cafe the aroma of garlic makes your tummy rumble. Order your pasta and then watch them knock it up right in front of you. Herbs and sauces are dramatically thrown into the pan, sizzling over a flame. This small room can burst with folk the early part of lunch but if you pop in after 1.30pm, thats when you get to see the true adorableness of it all. The team of men have banter, they laugh and joke with you while they prepare quick lunches for the locals. On the numerous occasions I have now visited, I have had seafood pasta with cream. On another day I have had pancetta and peas, also crayfish and lastly king prawns. Essentially, I go there and I know I will definitely see something I like. What is also great, is that as someone who is not keen on tomato based sauces, they kindly do mine with fresh cream – that’s service for you! The food is soooo tasty, like literally the best part of my working day. As if that was not enough, the portions are so big that they last me over two days for lunch, so at 7.50 a portion – that’s 3.75 per day for a decent lunch. This blows pret, pod and all the others out of the water.Repeat custom seems to be the basis of their success of course encourage by great service and amazing food. I can safely say that as long as I am working within walking distance, this is where I will be getting my lunch. cookandpour.co.uk
Fresh, simple, cheap. What’s not to love? I had a massive bowl of roasted veggies over lettuce with a sprinkle of olive oil, a smattering of herbs and generous globs of mozza–all for about 5 quid. Oh, and a seat at the window counter. Simple place, simple pleasures.PS This lunch place gets crowded, but not so much after about 2pm.
