Best place in London to have a chilled out time in East London, hands down. If you’re tired of ‘uber-cool’ bars or any of this ‘concept’ nonsense then come to Zigfrid – there’s absolutely no pretence about them, just good times, excellent staff, and awesome food. We always come straight here and order some of their sharers (the Buffalo Wings and Nachos come in HUGE portions and are such good value for the quality), plus the cocktails are great. Try the Ziggy Sungria – sitting outside in the summer it’s going to be my favourite place to people watch London! I also really recommend this place if you’re a music fan. They’ve always got great DJs and up and coming bands, and it’s the ideal place to enjoy a night.

I’ve been coming here for many years and, as a hang out den, it’s hard to beat. You won’t get crazier decor than this: there are surfboards on the ceiling and sculptures everywhere. There is even a totem pole, which has found its way into a lot of my photos, as I usually discover the day after. I have spent many a summer’s day in the garden at the front, sipping on a Hoxton Craft Beer, and many a rainy day inside on the sofas stuffing myself with pizza. The menu is actually really good and everyone goes crazy for the Big Ziggy Burger, which is delicious and packed with ham, cheese and all the good stuff. I personally LOVE the chicken wings and I could eat them by the bucket load, especially with the cheese dip they come with. The bar team are a friendly, talented bunch who know a thing or two about cocktails. Just say what you like and they’ll whip up something suited to you. A Ziggy Mojito is definitely what you want on a sunny day.Everyone knows Zigfrid as a music venue and it is one of the only non-commercial ones out there that love and support independent music. I’ve seen so many excellent bands here and they also do a lot of dance music nights upstairs. In an area of chain restaurants and fad bars, Zigfrid is a pretty special place, unchanged and always welcoming.

This place is beyond kooky and it’s excellent. The bar staff are friendly even when rushed off their feet and there’s some pretty talented cocktail makers among them. Visited on a Halloween night which is the prime place to be considering it’s normal decorations. They did some great themed cocktails, one of which was a three-rum ‘Zombie’ that they lit on fire. This place is all about putting on a show. I noticed they did vegan food and had a home cooked station but the kitchen wasn’t open when we were there. A fun, interesting bar that doubles as a nightclub when the downstairs Udderbelly opens in the evening.

Incredibly packed on weekends but there are secret seats to the left of the bar. They had highly creative cocktails created especially for the Halloween night I went on, titles such as the Ghoul and Zombie, including fire lit rum! There is a downstairs too but it was so crowded I feared it was breaching some health and safety laws but there was still a great atmosphere.

An inclusive, somewhat mainstream bar despite hipster location on Hoxton Square. Cool eclectic decor. A kind of Hell’s Angels Baroque with plenty of horns and animal skulls. The furniture designer looks like he might have learned his main skills (welding) from working on his motor bike.I’ve been disappointed by a pizza here in the past so I wasn’t expecting much, but last night I was pleasantly surprised by my food.We started with the meaty sharing platter called the Continental. Very generous though not the highest quality charcuterie. Parma and serrano ham, mortadella, chorizo, camambert, stilton and wensleydale on a bed of rocket. Chorizo could have been sliced thinner. There was some nice looking bits of brown toast that must have been tasty because my companion gobbled all of it. He was too full to order a main afterwards. I, however, am greedy and ordered the cuttlefish spaghetti from the seasonal specials menu. Really good dish. Spaghetti very al dente, though not served on a warmed plate. Inky black spaghetti, coated with a light tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes (no passata or paste), little bits of pan fried cuttlefish, capers and black olives. A very large portion too, which I couldn’t finish despite it being very good. The mostly meaty menu always contains a vegan option, as the bar owner is vegan. Staff is genuinely warm.

Zigfrid is my favourite place to go for drinks in Hoxton Square and I venture here regularly during nights out in Shoreditch. The venue is more eccentric than most places and has tons of hidden surprises and ironic decorations. For music, you can find lots of house music DJ’s in the evenings, some 80’s juke boxes dotted around, and gigs play here sometimes too. The staff are friendly and make some interesting cocktails. There is restaurant towards the back which makes basic pub food and homemade pizzas (plain margarita being my favourite). The crowd is generally quite young and there are always plenty of hipsters, as you can expect from its location. Watch out for the funky gothic mirrors in the toilets at the back!

The bouncer here was the rudest man I have ever encountered. He asked me if I understood English and asked me to leave just because he wanted my sisters legs to be behind a certain line when we were just sitting outside peacefully minding our own business. The music inside was pretty bad and after the experience with the bouncer I will never go back there.
