This cute little restaurant in Soho has yummy food. We tried the braised king prawn as a starter, which was served with spicy sauce. The menu has pictures of all the dishes which helps in deciding what you want. We ordered the pork with green bell peppers which has a slight gravy. All the chicken dishes looked good – we went for the bamboo fragrant chicken. It’s loaded with red chillies so be prepared ! The bean thread noodles with cabbage are also quite spicy. Overall we enjoyed everything as we love spicy food. Of course there are plenty of non spicy options as well.

Super food, a very ambience and friendly staff. We ordered the smacking cucumbers, which is a must. The ribs, prawns, sea bass, aubergine and beans all nice and spicy with chillies. The good thing is that the chillies add a lot of flavour, but don’t burn your mouth. Will recommend and will go back

Authentic Chinese food. I have been to Ba Shan three times now. Having lived in China for 10 years I’m familiar with the food and everything I’ve ever ordered has been delicious. If you’re not a fan of basements you should call ahead and request a table on the ground floor.

Meh… Chinese food in London is often a big disappointment so it was with some trepidation that I decided to try Ba Shan. My lunch consisted of Stir fried green beans with pork, General Tso’s chicken and some pork dumplings. The beans is one of my favourite dishes at Chilli Cool and whilst the Ba Shan version is tasty, it does not pack enough of a spice punch for me. I was steered in the direction of General Tso’s chicken by our server. It’s a gently spicy sweet and sour fried chicken affair which I read has it’s roots in the chinese american community. It was distinctly average. The dumplings were ok but had a disappointing dipping sauce – at these prices, I would rather drift down the road to Jen Cafe. Despite some of the scathing comments I have read re the service at Ba Shan, I found the waiting staff on the day I visited to be excellent. The surroundings are also very pleasant. That said, i left with a feeling of overall disappointment. If you want Chinese with a chilli kick then I would suggest Szechuanese rather than Hunanese is the way to go and I suggest you take a trip to Chilli Cool. It has much less Soho swagger but in the opinion of this humble reviewer is better value and more importantly serves better food.

Not impressed. at all…. Cute and clean place but food wasn’t good. wok pork turned out to be bits of dry bacon with bits of vegetables and mountains of chilli and while i don’t mind spicy food it lacked any other taste, it was like eating fried air with chili oil. same problem with chicken stew, just hot and oily, nothing else. rice portions were small. will not go back.

From a family of foodies, advice is don’t bother. Maybe it was an off day but the pastry was poor, the dumplings lacked any discernable taste. To say we were disappointed is an understatement but when the bill arrived, it was doubly disappointing. Not returning anytime soon. 4/10 (and that’s for the decor)

Just Amazing.. Brilliant Szechuan, you can pre-order the baked chilli chicken which is immensely hot. Bar Shu across the street it seems is affiliated and is also amazing. Can get quite expensive for small numbers though.
