The Potato Project, Soho I thought I had met the ultimate potato lover, and married him. But then I spoke to Ksenia Karpenko, a young entrepreneur who took her fascination with potatoes and went on to open an eatery called, The Potato Project. I was just in pure amazement to come to acknowledgement that there was another mortal out there who is as dedicated as Mr L to the potato. Mr L has quite a fascinating theory to his potato (if you want to know what it is, we will need a serious discussion over a Gin & Tonic) and I was wondering if Ksenia Karpenko had one too. I was eager to find out. So, when I was invited to a bloggers event for a potato feast, I accepted instantly. The blogger’s event also collaborated with Nix & Kix, a non-alcoholic drink based on chilli. Co-founders Julia and Kerstin started in the beverage industry because they wanted an alternative non-alcoholic drink that was not bland or too sugary. Gathered on the same afternoon, we sampled a range of their drinks paired to the dishes from The Potato Project.watermelon and tomato salad with roasted goat cheese before tasting the watermelon and tomato together, I thought the watery nature would actually be a little boring but this was completely the opposite because the sweet, tangy tomato was mellowed by the watermelon. Both textures gave a different mouth feel and I thought it was brilliant. A good welcome to the summery weather. The cheese, I avoided. avocado with chickpea chips with the chilli jam, it provides the slight sweetness to the guacamole. It was very nice but could do with a little more seasoning. roasted carrots with stracciatella and mango chutney roasted vegetables always work for me and I adore this dish. The stracciatella, which I carefully avoided, had thumbs up from the rest and applaud that the dish worked well. sweet potato ceviche style the zesty and tangy flavour really cuts through the sweetness of the sweet potato and I find that in the hot summery weather, really works. I just didn’t quite like the texture of the prawns with the mashy sweet potato. superfood sweet potato with quinoa, kale, almonds and pomegranate this was clever with all the ingredients associated to being a superfoods. It’s not one of the typical jacket potato toppings but the quinoa gave that additional texture, the kale provided the wholesome greenness, the almonds gave the nutty element and little burst of sweetness and fruity side to the whole dish. It worked.sweet potato with mozzarella, pesto and sun-dried tomato it was a good decent pesto intensified with the sun-dried tomato, it reminded me of the lovely flavours of Italy. chilli beef ragu and blue cheese I thought that the tomato based sauce was strong that it overpowers the other flavours. The sauce consistency was thick and therefore felt dry. borlotti bean, tomato and mature cheddar cheese texture of the beans were cooked to perfection but like the chilli beef ragu, I felt that the tomato based sauce was strong and came across as only one flavour.tuna mayonnaise, roast corn and pickled red onion generous portions of tuna but I would have preferred to have a little more sauce as it was on the dryish side.sweet potato tartlet with honey, ginger, mint, almonds and vanilla ice-cream the flavours were a winner for me and we all voted it as the best potato dish for the day; not to mention that we do have a soft spot for dessert. The sweet potato filling was soft and smooth, quite a contrast to the buttery and crumbly pastry and quite tough to cut through. vi-vian.com
