Ever had a typical Italian aperitivo experience? Well, if not, then this is a place in London to experience it. It is typical in Milan to go for a drink between 7-9pm. An aperitivo is a pre-dinner drink and usually these small places serve a buffet of simple dishes that you can eat as much as you like with your drink. This event runs on a Friday night at giovanni ranas around one a month. The entrance is ten pounds and with that you get a drink from a choice of wine, spirits, negroni and cocktails. There is a long line for the buffet which moves pretty fast, almost as fast as the food! Thankfully the food is topped up very quickly and there is plenty to round. The buffet is served by two servers and you are given small plates which are filled up very generously. If you arrive at 7/7.30 there is a good chance you will get a table to eat at, otherwise it’s quite nice to stand a mingle. The food changed as the evening went on. We started off with snacks such as bruschetta, potato salad, Crispy fried cheese ravioli, pizzetti and chips. The second round was a selection of hot ravioli in different sauces. We then had penne arrabiatta (not for vegetarians in this case!) and a lovely tagliatelle in chilli oil. The food was simple but good value for ten pounds and a great opportunity to mingle with friends and new people.
This place is usually empty mid week and I wonder what it is like weekends! i go here because the pasta is excellent. However the starters are uninspiring. Had parmigiana and bacon fritters which were over powered with cheese and no ham! In the meantime service was lacking. I asked for glass of Chianti at 9.50 gbp for a 125ml was horrendously expensive and did not match the price! I had finished the starter before it arrived. Ravioli with ngiri sausage and sage was very good thoughMy suggestion would be to offer 1/2 price pasta starters to go with a main course, then half their wine prices. Then it would be packed. It’s just too pricey for that casual after work experience. So get people eating the pasta at half price and there is a little treasure here. I know why it’s empty – too pricey in my view but so easy to fix and fill the place. Unique pasta!
