From my account it is quite evident that I am fond of Chinese and I don’t mind getting into any restaurant as long as it serves Chinese food! But most Chinese restaurant have one down-side and that is their service. This is no different in China Garden. As we got seated in the restaurant, we called for one of the order takers. We were very excited to get started with prawn dumplings but as we uttered the word dumpling we were told in the most blunt manner to first confirm if we would like to order drinks! Not quite great a welcome! Anyways, we went ahead with jasmine tea to comply to their instructions. For starters, we ordered prawn dumplings, satay king prawn skewer and deep fried salt and pepper prawns. The starters were good but nothing extraordinary. The satay king prawn skewer was quite average as it did not have any flavors to it and tasted quite bland. The dimsums althoughtasted quite good with chilli sauce. For mains, we went ahead with chicken fried rice, egg fried rice, plain fried noodles with bean sproutsand chicken in black bean sauce. The egg fried rice and chicken fried rice were quite average. I have surely had better in Chinatown. The noodles was nice and different from the regular fare that I had tasted. The chicken in black bean sauce was as expected and checked all the boxes for us. As far as pricing goes, the restaurant is adequately priced for the location and the ambience. The service is quick but the staff could do with a bit of training on being courteous. Though I must add that while they did seem a little rude in the beginning they however had mellowed down by the time we left as they managed to give a smile here and there and also asked us if we had enjoyed our food!!! ;-)All in all, a restaurant worth trying if you are in the vicinity.

Good food, nice and calm atmosphere and decent service. While not spectacular; this place is definitely better than your average Chinese restaurant.I usually do the seafood or fish with steamed rice. However, their aromatic crispy duck is also very good. For desert the go for toffee apple it’s absolutely delightful.

China Garden is a great quality Chinese restaurant set along Finchley Road. Even though it’s in a bit of a dead part of Finchley Road, there are always plenty of customers in the restaurant. There is a pleasant, bright ambience, and the venue is often decorated with white fairy lights.Food is a bit on the pricey side, but then again you’re paying for tasty well-cooked dishes. I came here once for a birthday dinner with my parents and I wasn’t disappointed. We usually opt for a set menu or just a few dishes to share, such as the dim sum platter. The crispy shredded beef is also a favourite (pictured); it’s crispy, as it should be, sweet and spicy, and presented in a charming prawn cracker bowl. The service is also very friendly and the manager is very attentive to her customers, making sure that you are happy with your experience. I also once accidentally left my rucksack in the restaurant and the waitress even ran out after me! Much obliged for the good food and my bag’s rescue!

To know a restaurant is to eat there. To really KNOW a restaurant is to strike up a relationship with its owner. I stopped by China Garden and ordered marinated jellyfish and ma-lo tofu. The waitress took my order and this woman, the owner, came over to confirm my order, and I started to chuckle. She explained that not many people, non-chinese, order these dishes, so I assured her that yes indeed i know what i am ordering and we both got a laugh.I go there now for traditional chinese dishes and even dim sum – nice to know that the combination and variety of dishes are available. Later, I learned that this restaurant caters to the nearby Chinese Embassy so their menu can be quite varied. It is not Chinatown, nor does it have to be. They know what they are doing and that’s what counts. Did I mention the ma-po tofu is excellent.Eat at China Garden and use your appetite to explore the country, its cultures and traditions through its food preparation.

Located near Swiss Cottage, on Finchley Road, I was initially excited to find a Chinese restaurant. Most times when I walked past it I would sight, however, only very modest crowd, if at all. But I love Chinese one of those cuisines I can see myself eating everyday and some weeks, actually achieve that as well;-) so I did end up trying it. The day we visited, they had a huge group of expats who seemed to enjoy the meal greatly and loudly, if I may add!My experience with China Garden has been a bit puzzling though I am not exactly put off but am far from having gotten excited. This is what we ordered for two: CHINA GARDEN MIX HOR DOEUVRES (3.80) which is basically 2 vegetarian and 3 non-vegetarian starters including spring rolls, crispy spinach, barbecue spare ribs, chicken satay and sesame prawn toast loved the last two, the spare ribs were chewy & tough in parts, and we didnt dig the first & second at all! MALAYSIAN STYLE FRIED HO FUN (7.80) this was a wet or soupy noodle dish. Quite liked it although it was rather delicately flavoured; very comfort-food-ish. I did detect use of oyster sauce in the gravy but the flavor note was mild, perhaps too mild. DEEP FRIED PRAWN DUMPLING (3.80) whats not to like, prawn stuffed inside a wonton wrapper and deep fried. Surprisingly the prawn hadn’t become chewy or overcooked. It was quite skillfully done.China Garden does deliver in the neighbourhood by the way. You could also order online and it does offer a discount on takeaway;-)

Most disappointing :-(. I will never go to this restaurant again. Ever.I called to order takeaway food for a special occasion and was told to collect in 10 to 15 minutes.I arrived and was told that my order was not ready. I went out and returned 10 minutes later. This time, I was told that there was a problem with my order i.e. it had never been sent to the kitchen. The staff started to argue amongst themselves and eventually remembered that I was still standing there, and told me to wait.I was already running late because of their incompetence and decided to go a few doors down to Green Cottage. In hindsight, I was lucky that I did so. The food from Green Cottage was expertly prepared and delicious – our guests were delighted. So, many thanks to Green Cottage and to those who dare to venture to China Garden, I wish you the best of luck. I will not be tempting fate again by going anywhere near China Garden again.
